High risk DS

Hi ladies,

Had my results come back today from screening and my risk of DS is 1 in 15. I’m heartbroken. Already been to the hospital to discuss options but just feel lost. Can’t stop crying. Just keep thinking why me. Is there any chance my baby is ok? What tests should I do? I’m thinking of a private blood test.

I'm sorry you're in this situation. I had tests come back as higher risk than I was comfortable with for my first pregnancy (although the NHS still classed it low risk; I was not in the same situation as you). I had the Harmony test done privately. It cost about 450 pounds and the results were back in a week. I got odds of less than 1 in 10,000 and I was so relieved. If the Harmony had indicated something was wrong then I would have had invasive testing to confirm.

The chances your baby is okay is 14 in 15. Try and hold on to that while you decide your next step x

Hang on... I've just thought... Doesn't the NHS now offer those non invasive blood tests to pregnancies that come back with a high risk result? Or is that only in certain areas?

No apparently it’s not available as yet, I just feel like I’m in limbo. It’s the waiting that’s the worst. Saw a genetic counsellor and the way she put it to me is 93.3% chance will be ok and 6.7% that it will have downs. Feel so drained

I had odds of 1 in 5 of Downs and baby is fine. I had the CVS procedure on the NHS. It's up to you whether you have that or not. My baby had a high NT measurement (nuchal translucency) of 3.9 so was at risk of a chromosomal abnormality in general (although all came back clear).

If it is just your age and bloods that have created the risk then you can opt to pay for the private non-invasive blood test. But don't lose hope, it is far more likely that your baby is fine than not. Thinking of you because I know how awful I felt when I got that news Flowers xx

So sorry you are in this situation, it must be heartbreaking. A friend of mine had similar odds and was told by a nurse to think of putting 15 cards on a table. What are the chances of picking that one card. Helped her at the time to see that the chances were still quite slim and she went on to have a healthy baby boy. Best wishes for the future.

Thanks everyone. It’s the waiting that’s the worst thing. I think we are opting for private blood tests. I’m 29 and my chances should be like 1 in 900 and something.. just scared

I found the private blood tests allowed me to set my worries to one side and allowed me to feel confident through the rest of the pregnancy. Hopefully they will do exactly the same for you. Best of luck, and do let us know how you get on if you get a moment x
