18 weeks pregnant. Breasts really hurt, so I have to express... Is this bad?

Once I've expressed, it doesn't hurt anymore, but a lot starts coming out. I've heard this can promote premature labour. Really worried now. Please advise.

I wouldn't express at 18 weeks. Not before 37 I've always been told.

Can you use hot/cold compresses to relieve the feeling? And make sure you're wearing a good supportive bras At this stage in your pregnancy you'll probably find it passes or settles down in a week or two.

I don’t express as in with a pump if that’s what you’re meaning but I do have to give them a squeeze from time to time to release a little milk so they stop hurting. No different to partner playing with them during sex imo.

What are you getting out? Colostrum?

Some people breastfeed during pregnancy so it can’t be that bad.
I was told by my MW that nipple stimulation would only ever set off labour if it were teetering on the edge of starting anyway.

If it’s colostrum, save and freeze it. Don’t waste it!

I'm 18 weeks today and my breasts and nipples have been absolute agony for the last few days. I was also wondering whether my boobs were gearing up to start producing colostrum. I remember it happening about 19-20 weeks with my son. It's making me quite miserable as they just ache.

How are you expressing (hand or pump)? What's actually coming out? And how much are you expressing?

Although not recommended to express before baby reaches term, I think the risks are really quite small. I'm pregnant and still breastfeeding - as mentioned above - and neither midwife or GP raised any concern.

I would try not to express unless absolutely necessary and maybe speak to your midwife about it and see what she says/recommends. She may well say it's fine!

@Gemsie1984 do they hurt like hell when someone hugs you?

Apparently a school parent cottoned on to my pregnancy when I hugged my son after a school trip and went “Argh my boobs!”

I don’t remember that, but I do remember hugs generally being bloody painful!
