First trimester - so worried about the heat

Bit of advice/comfort needed. I'm 10 weeks and freaking out about this heatwave. Keep finding myself in situations where I can't cool down - other people's cars, sweltering meeting rooms (have my own personal fan but it only does so much), even just waking up and realising I've got way too hot while alseep. Is this going to have done any damage? So worried about it. TIA.

No it won’t have done any damage. Your body regulates its own temperature.

Discotits · 07/07/2018 22:12

It’s fine. Your body is 37 degrees anyway

Stringofpearls · 07/07/2018 22:13

Honestly try not to worry about it, I was living abroad for my first trimester and the temperature rose to 40 degrees. Just make sure you get shade where possible and keep your fluids up, you need to drink loads of water. If you are struggling to cool down try creating a sort of reverse water bottle and having it with you, I used a freeze block wrapped in a towel.

SoyDora · 07/07/2018 22:14

(Its own internal temperature, I mean).
People have babies in boiling hot countries all the time. People are pregnant in the summer all the time. I’m 15 weeks and currently in southern Spain, it’s approx 38 degrees in the day time.

Stringofpearls · 07/07/2018 22:14

I should have added that I now have a beautiful, happy and healthy baby!

SoyDora · 07/07/2018 22:15

Oh and I lived in Madrid when pregnant with my first (over the summer). I was always hot!

ChaChaChaCh4nges · 07/07/2018 22:15

People in far hotter climates have been raising babies successfully for literally millennia, right back to the origin of the human species under the African sun. You’ll be fine.

augustboymummy17 · 07/07/2018 22:18

Your be absolutely fine people have baby's abroad all the time how you think women cope in Africa etc? Congratulations on the pregnancy and at least you will have it cooler towards the end of your pregnancy

ErrantBakedBean · 07/07/2018 22:52

Thank you, that does help. I've tried taking my temperature but I've got one of those in-ear ones which can read completely different temperatures 1 second apart... so I don't know what to trust. Also now I'm worrying I haven't drunk enough water! Pregnancy anxiety is the worst... I do try to drink regularly but it's hard with the nausea.

Try ice lollies for nausea and ice cold water for hydration. I had a water aversion when I was pregnant - it all tasted like chalk no matter what I drank! I had either fizzy or just added squash

spugzbunny · 07/07/2018 23:04

Also for temperature - you'll need a baby thermometer anyway so get one and check using that.

ErrantBakedBean · 08/07/2018 17:38

Have made some ice lollies today - thank you! And might be a stupid question as temperature is temperature but do baby thermometers read adults correctly too?

You’ll be fine. When I was pg with DD I lived in the UEA. There are plenty of things to get anxious about in pregnancy but somehow damaging the baby because it’s hot outside isn’t one of them.Have you had a chat with your midwife about your anxiety?

SoyDora · 08/07/2018 17:45

Agree with chatting about your anxiety with a midwife. There is no reason that the weather being warm would damage your baby. Your internal body temperature remains the same, unless illness/infection causes it to change.
Every single pregnant woman in the UK will currently be feeling hot! As I said upthread I’m currently 15 weeks and in southern Spain, it’s bloody boiling (close to 40 degrees today)

spugzbunny · 08/07/2018 18:20

Yep they'll read anyone's temperature correctly! I find them super easy as you can do in ear or on forehead and it lights green or red.

Wolfiefan · 08/07/2018 18:22

You really don't need to be freaking out. It's normal to want to do the best for your baby and to want to make healthy and educated decisions. Freaking out about being hot is a worrying overreaction.

ErrantBakedBean · 08/07/2018 18:52

Ok, thanks all. I mentioned the anxiety briefly to the mw but she just mentioned courses further down the line or going on a list for counselling, which I already have. It does help to know that the worry is irrational though.

And thanks spugz, I'll get one

I'm 11 weeks and currently sat with my feet in a bucket of cold water to cool down with a fan pointed at me (our living room is an absolute oven!).
The heat won't do you baby any harm, please don't worry. It might make you feel worse than normal when pregnant though, with the tiredness / nausea of the first trimester. Just take it as easy as your reasonably can and drink fluids (whatever you can stomach, doesn't have to be plain water to keep you hydrated).
