Having c section next Friday and I had packed vests, sleepsuits, a cardigan & hat but with the current weather I’m rethinking. I’ve got some short sleeve/leg rompers, would those be better? DS was a January baby and much easier to plan for!

I've packed vests and short sleeve/leg rompers, but also a blanket and a massive muslin as I'm thinking baby might be in a nappy with the big muslin as a blanket. When they're first born you need a hat. I've also packed socks and scratch mitts as I'm thinking it'll be too hot for baby to wear the sleepsuits with inbuilt ones.

I might kick the cardi out, keep 2 sleepsuits ‘just in case’ and add the rompers. I’ve packed enough muslins for the whole postnatal ward Grin

I've packed for all eventualities really - vests, sleepsuits, cardigans, hats and swaddles. I've read in various places that midwives will insist on babies being in a sleep suit and hat, regardless of the temperature Confused

I was in the maternity assessment unit the other week and the heat was stifling so I've definitely gone for lightweight pyjamas and nighties for me and DH is packing shorts!

I've stayed in overnight twice after c- sections and it was a lot hotter in November with the heating blasting than it was when I stayed in May when they had the aircon on at night.
I'd take the sleepsuits and vests, then you've got 3 layers to choose from - just vest, just sleepsuit, or both. Take some socks too if you can get some because even if it's got enough for just a vest the baby's feet will get cold easily during the night. And my hospital said that the baby should have a hat on at all times in the hospital because even if it's hot there is more breeze than usual because of tge aircon and all the people walking about/ curtains being opened and closed.
Take a cardi or shirt for you too so you can cover up over your pjs if you get chilly.
Good luck x

I’ve gone for:
7 vests
3 sleepsuits
3 rompers
2 hats & pairs of socks

I’d packed nighties for me anyway due to Catheter and found a dressing gown made of muslin material for walking to theatre so I don’t flash my bum Blush

Hopefully all eventualities covered, now just the snacks to think of Grin

I’ve just spent a week on a postnatal ward with DS2, it was boiling, even with aircon units in each room. Maybe worth calling and asking how hot it is?
DS was in just a nappy or a happy plus sleeveless vest most of the time, and with a muslin as a blanket. He was given a hat in the delivery suite but only needed it occasionally.
Some of the best things I had were - an Evian spray for my face, flannels to soak in cold water, an insulated water bottle and a lightweight cotton dressing gown.

Always take a cardi, it's the UK :)

Get some of that cooling mist spray and a battery powered fan.

Levithecat · 06/07/2018 11:50

Btw, DS was prem and quite small, but the midwives still felt just nappy/vest were best - the thermometer in our room was between 28 and 30 even with the aircon unit on.

littlecabbage · 06/07/2018 11:53

They always go into a sleepsuit and hat first, as it's a shock to leave your very warm body.

But depending on how hot the postnatal ward is, baby will probably just need a vest or possibly just a nappy there, esp if getting lots of skin-to-skin cuddle time from you.

You'll be in 2/3 day's recovering. In hot weather, you can't beat vests on their own, but I'd still pack sleep suits too. Are the wards air conditioned now, used to be just fans in my day?

I know it's tempting to want them to have outfits when they are newborn, but I think vests and sleep suits are all newborns need at anytime of year, the most comfortable thing for them to wear day and night.

I'd still pack a cardigan, hat and scratch mits.

Good luck, cool stuff for yourself too, momma! Congratulations, wishing you a speedy recovery, exciting times ahead!
