High risk, forced to have c-sec early?

I'm high risk, will I have to have a c-sec and will it have to be early?

That's a question for your consultant, you have to talk through the potential risks and come to a conclusion. You can always ask to see another consultant if the first one is not willing to go the way you'd prefer but they usually have dam good reasons if they want to do a c-section.

Icklepickle101 · 05/07/2018 17:37

High risk for what? They are very loathe to do c sections before 39 weeks if at all avoidable

peachesarenom · 05/07/2018 17:56

Erm gest diabetes, blood clots and pre lampsia

How many weeks are you? You should have a consultant appointment at some point to discuss this.

jellyandsoup · 05/07/2018 18:05

No reason you should need to deliver early if your gdm is well controlled. The other 2 it ery much depends on the circumstances. If you develop pre eclampsia then it is much safer to deliver. Are you at risk of blood clots?

Bluebellysmell · 05/07/2018 18:12

You don't HAVE to have anything, health professionals will advise you what they think the best course of action is but you can always say no.

None of those mean you have to have a CS, only if they become a problem might you need to have baby early but the option would normally be for induction over a section unless there was a medical need for a section.

mayhew · 05/07/2018 18:25

Best practice for gestational diabetes is getting to 39-40 weeks. That might be earlier if your diabetes is not well controlled. See how you go.
Pre eclampsia risk, it depends if you actually develop the condition. If you don't, then again, no need to deliver early.
Blood clots. If you mean in yourself, if you are high risk you will be put on anti clotting injections for the whole pregnancy. No indication to deliver early.

peachesarenom · 05/07/2018 18:26

Yes, my consultant appt is on the 18th.

I just wondered whether I'd have to go early.

I went at 36 and 5 after high risk gestational diabetes pregnancy. It was fine and baby was fine. Went home with us two days later. How early are they talking?

peachesarenom · 05/07/2018 18:32

Antonia87 they haven't said anything yet was just wondering. Were you induced or c-sec? How did you feel after?

OP posts:
crumpet · 05/07/2018 18:35

I had similar, but no way felt “forced” - the choice was risk to me/the baby or a cs. For me it was a no brainer, even though it was not what i’d hoped for.

dannydyerismydad · 05/07/2018 18:37

You won't be forced to do anything - you should consent to any intervention before it takes place.

You might like to use the BRAIN technique in your consultants appointments.

What are the Benefits of the treatment you recommend?

dannydyerismydad · 05/07/2018 18:38

What are the Benefits?
What are the Risks?
Are there any Alternatives?
What is my Instinct telling me?
What would happen if we did Nothing?

peachesarenom · 05/07/2018 19:10

Oh yes, I like the brain technique.

I was high risk of getting gd, blood clots and PE, due to high BMI. I didn't get any of those conditions, although my BP went a bit squiffy at 38 weeks. My consultant decided after growth scans that I ought to have a planned c-section as I was having a large baby and had a precious c-section. It wasn't really what I wanted but it was statistically safer so I went along with it. Just because you are high risk doesn't mean it is inevitable you will succumb to certain conditions. Risks can be managed.

Antonia87 · 05/07/2018 19:45

I had a c-section and it was amazing! All over in a hour and recovery very easy. I would happily have another !

peachesarenom · 05/07/2018 20:50

DiabolicalMess exactly the same! All due to high BMI! Apparently I am in the pre diabetic range though so may well get GD despite being careful on the food front.

Antonia87 was physical recovery ok? Can I ask if you also have high BMI?

I think ultimately as I have no medical training I would go with medical advice.

Baby due at Christmas so being a month early would be no bad thing!

OP posts:
BlueBug45 · 05/07/2018 21:40

OP don't bank on the baby being born a month early as even if you are high risk most hospitals don't like doing C-sections before 39 weeks as research has shown doing at 39-40 weeks gives the best chance of survival for the baby. If something does go wrong they will try and delay you going into labour until 37 weeks if they can, as they try to ensure the baby's lungs are developed as much as possible.

As PPs have pointed out just because you are high risk doesn't mean you will get all or any of the conditions you are at risk from. The consultant may decide an induction and vaginal birth is better for you, however this may change anytime before you give birth or even while you are in labour.

Incidentally some hospitals have a specialist unit within their maternity unit for pregnant women with high BMIs, so if your maternity unit is one they will have midwives, obstetricians etc all trained and experienced in dealing with women with high BMIs, so if you treated by such a unit you may end up with more birth options.

And no I don't have a high BMI, I'm high risk due to age and blood conditions.

LostMyBaubles · 05/07/2018 21:46

High risk means high risk
Im high risk for blood clots so they've put me on blood thinning injections
Im high risk for p.e thankfully never had it
Im high risk gd but dont have it atm
Have been checked still keeping eye on me

Baby is large for gestational age.

I also have low lying placenta.

Scan next week and see the consultant to see what my plan is but never been told (unless placenta hasnt moved) that i need a section early.

Very much doubt a month early.

And yes I have high bmi.
Try not to worry too much about it

Antonia87 · 05/07/2018 21:59

For me recovery was a walk in the park. Much quicker than several of my friends who had a natural delivery. Felt quite smug 😉. I would recommend over an induction any day.

Antonia87 · 05/07/2018 22:01

Nope, I had a normal BMI before I got pregnant. Not so much now as still hanging onto baby weight ☹️

peachesarenom · 05/07/2018 22:50

Thank you for all your help. I will get back to taking one day at a time!

OP posts:
welshmist · 05/07/2018 22:55

One day at a time is how the consultant will probably move forward. Be prepared to be told you are coming in tomorrow, things can change quickly so get your bags packed.
