Going to New York while pregnant

I've recently just found out I'm pregnant and already booked to go to New York in December for 4 nights, I've worked out I'll be 26 weeks when I fly? I'm starting to worry will I be okay to fly, I know I'd have to wear some stockings and get up regular and walk around,
Also what insurance is best?
I'm all new to this so hope I've done it right :)

Whilst many people have no issues like PPs above, cabin pressurisation (& of course de-pressurisation on descent) can have an effect on pregnancy.

What do you mean 'can affect pregnancy'? I did a lot of research before I flew (generally very anxious in pregnancy), spoke to both my midwife and my GP and neither of them mentioned this, so I think unless you have a specific issue (which is why you should always talk to your midwife before going) this seems like scare-mongering.

There is no evidence that a flight to NY and back will harm your baby, although you need to be aware of DVT risk so discuss that with your doctor/midwife. All airlines will take you at that gestation and you’re unlikely to need a fit to fly letter until 28 weeks. Main issue (and most important) is insurance. Get it now (in case your pregnancy becomes complicated and you can’t go) and make sure it covers you, childbirth and the baby (including repatriation back home). Have a fab time!

I went to New York and I was 28 weeks pregnant.
My midwife wrote me a letter saying I could fly incase the airline was wary of me and just told me to make sure I got up and walked around!
And on the way back I asked for an aisle seat as I was pregnant and they upgraded me and my mum so we had loads of room!
We had a great time and Christmas time is the best in NY!

What a load of bollocks whatdoido2018
Quite irresponsible to be spouting rubbish and then claiming you have industry-specific knowledge. I’ve flown up till 32 weeks gestation and never been asked for a letter even (although I did get one at 28 weeks from mw). I’ve checked BA and Lufthansa policies in detail and both allow pregnant women to fly until at least 32 weeks if not longer.

I flew to Vegas when I was 25 weeks - Virgin Atlantic I think have a cut off of 28 weeks although it'll be on their website. My midwife wrote me a fit to fly letter although I was never asked for it.

I stuck with my travel insurance from my bank account but rang them first to check I would be fully covered in the case of an emergency.

On the flight I wore compression socks as I always do on long haul, had an aisle seat & got up every hour at least for a wander around & to use the loo. We booked extra legroom which was well worth it. Also just make sure you drink a lot.

I'm 31 weeks no with no ill effects! Just take it easy, take lots of layers as you can never tell how cold it'll be in NY at Christmas, & enjoy the magic! You'll have a fab time xx

I wouldn't EVER fly to another country whilst pregnant personally! Especially not at 26 weeks

I flew over 15 times in my first pregnancy as I was basically commuting to milan. My last flight was at 32 weeks. I had multiple holidays abroad in my second pregnancy, flying back at 34 weeks. I am currently 15 weeks with my third and am currently abroad. Absolutely no issues, I wasn’t refused from the flight at any point (had a fit to fly letter in the latter weeks), I did plenty of research which said flying does not harm your baby, I ensured my insurance would cover the baby if I was to go into premature labour...

Stop scaremongering.

I went at 20 weeks and loved it. I was very tired at night after walking miles so might have misssd out on some of the night life. Just be careful choosing insurance and take your pregnancy notes in your hand luggage.

piggybrownhare · 06/07/2018 12:18

Oh and to the person who said they wouldn’t fly in pregnancy, what nonsense, as long as you don’t have any complications and check with your midwife then why not?! I flew in both my pregnancies, once at 20 weeks and once at 29 weeks.
