Meltdown over baby sizes!

I’m sure I will sound dramatic, but I’m pregnant with my first child, and I’m so overwhelmed with the different sizes/differences between stores. As of right now, I have a lot of “up to 1 month” clothing which says 10lbs, but now I’m stressed that I will need smaller sizes? Apologies in advance at how silly I must sound, I’m an over thinker by nature

Don't go smaller. You baby will only grow. You'll have something that fits well enough for the few weeks up to when they grow into it. My DS was only in 'up to one month' for two weeks and was only on the 30th percentile.

With Amazon Prime and 24 supermarkets it doesn't matter. My 6.13 girl was all legs and in tiny baby for 6 weeks - drowning in up to 1 month. Others go straight to 0-3. We had newborn but DH picked up tiny in the morning...

Not very helpful but oh my, this has brought back memories of my little boy in his up to 1 month vests and sleepsuits - so cute! All the best, newborns are just wonderful Smile

Get some newborn/up to 1 month and some 0-3, you'll be fine. If things are too big it doesn't matter much and you'll be able to send someone out to get something more size appropriate in time if they are desperately huge.

If I was doing it again, I’d get two cheap multipacks of newborn and two cheap multipacks of 0-3 and wait and see what sort of baby I got. My little girl was 6lb 7oz and is on the second centile for growth so was in newborn for nearly 3 months. She wore her clothes out before she outgrew them even though everyone said not to bother with newborn because she’d be in it 5 minutes.....It’s so easy to buy more of what you need, it’s sinpler just to get a few of the basics then order more when the baby is here.

Different shops are different sizes. In my experience Next and John Lewis clothes run large, Mamas & Papas and M&S clothes run small. My baby is 5 months and currently wearing 0-3 trousers from John Lewis and 6-9 tshirt from M&S!

BertieBotts · 04/07/2018 20:59

Agree - don't get smaller clothing. If baby is really very teeny tiny you can send people out to get things, and M&S do next day delivery by default on any of their premature sized baby clothes they have online. Do a shout out on FB for anybody who might have prem stuff for you as well but normally you don't need it.

If you really feel very anxious about it look for a bundle on ebay? But generally clothes which are a little bit big are no problem at all (check out DS at 3 days old, 6lb 11 in 0-3 month clothing, attached :)) whereas clothes which are too small are just a waste of money and you probably won't get back to the shop to return them in time.

(Newborn and up to 1 month are two ways to state the same size).

BertieBotts · 04/07/2018 21:02

BTW the 10lbs figure on that is usually the maximum weight for that clothing, not the minimum.

dippyeggsandsoldiers · 04/07/2018 21:07

I bought all 0-3 months clothes thinking I'd have a massive baby, but she was 6lb and the tiniest thing I've ever seen. You'd be better buying bigger sizes and then buy smaller afterwards if you need to. The majority of family and friends bought us newborn bits anyway but we had to go out and buy a handful of tiny baby clothes because she was so diddy. She's now 4 months old and still In a few newborn bits and just starting to fit into the 0-3 clothes! She's chunky but not very long. I've managed to get loads of wear out of them and they've lasted me longer, so definitely buy bigger.

elliejjtiny · 04/07/2018 21:10

I agree with getting 2 packs of newborn and 2 packs of 0-3. It's really easy to get baby clothes delivered quickly when you find out what size they are.

EmmaJR1 · 04/07/2018 21:15

I agree with pp - Get a Couple of each and wait. My son was so tall we cut the feet off his sleep suits. For my daughter we only bought 0-3 mths and had to whizz out and get up to 1 month stuff because she was tiny!

butlerswharf · 04/07/2018 21:17

We got up to one month. Baby was. 6lb and they were double her size so we then did another M&S order for delivery for newborn size the day after she was born. If you buy some newborn stuff just before you're due you can always return them. Or you can do as we did. No biggie.

WhirlingTurkey · 05/07/2018 06:11

Don't fret OP. Wait until baby is here and see how the things you have already fit, you can buy more if/as needed. Baby clothes being a bit big isn't the end of the world. When my DS was born he was swamped in newborn, so we got some extra bits in "tiny baby" size, but it is amazing how quickly they grow and start to fill out those baggy clothes!
