Blood pressure

Hello,
I am 27 weeks into my second pregnancy. With my first I had pre eclampsia, so this one they are being overly cautious. My consultant has said I need my blood pressure checked weekly from 28 weeks (next week!) However my midwife has said I need to go to my gp for the nurse to do it as she only does clinic one day a week that gets filled up. I have asked at the gp and they have said that the nurse isn't always there so they wouldn't be able to fit me in every week for a blood pressure check. Now what? Apparently a home monitor isn't reliable so they won't allow that either!

Lots of chemists do free blood pressure checks, I think there's a website that lets you check which ones

Sorry forgot to say, asked at my chemist and they said they aren't allowed to do pregnant women Hmm

Are you under a Consultant? If so, I’d ring their Secretary tomorrow and ask them if they could suggest a way to get it done as the MW and GP can’t accomdate. You might find that once your Consultant learns that the MW won’t do it, she may suddenly find she has the capacity after all.

I was advised to get a home bp monitor the second time I was (first time severe pre eclampsia, baby delivered at 31 weeks). Often more reliable at home because you’re not nervous/stress about being at doctors/hospital. Very strange they won’t let you do that. I’d be getting in touch with the consultant if I were you. Are you on low dose aspirin?

Do you have the phone number for your ANDU/MAU? They will do a BP check for you, no problem.

@Igottastartthinkingbee I was also told a healthcare professional had to monitor my blood pressure by my consultant. In my case I alternate between a GP and MW as I need a urine test as well. (The consultant is freaking out about pre-eclampsia though I have no family history of it, and have a mother and full sister who gave birth over 40.)

OP as suggested get in touch with the consultant and say the MW and your GP can't accommodate you.

Thank you very much, I actually have a consultant appointment this Friday so will discuss it with her then Smile

Bluebug it’s much less likely to happen second time around if that makes you feel any better. I also had no family history or risk factors (except being a first time pregnancy). I did have blood pressure issues towards the end of my second pregnancy though. But it was managed with labetalol and I was induced on my due date. Good luck, I hope all goes well!
