So yes ^^ I am looking at my nails and they are covered in chipped nail polish so wanted to give some new life to them but I've read online and been told nail varnish isn't allowed on when in labour? I understand if you know your having a c section then this is understandable but unless it's an emergency that's not what I am down to have so would they mind my toes and fingers being painted ?

I think normal polish is fine, they'll take it off if needed although i don't remember anyone checking mine during c section

mosessupposes · 04/07/2018 17:40

you don't know you aren't having a c section, you just know you don't have one planned, you really don't want them wasting time removing it, just clean off what is grotty and you'll be able to reach your feet more easily in a few weeks.

Do you know why they don't like nail varnish?

It doesn't matter, they'll take it off anyway if they need to.

I had a c section 6 weeks ago and had shellac on my fingers and toes and no issues

It’s because if they need to monitor you they will use a pulse ox monitor which clips to your finger to measure your SATs and painted nails can make the readings inaccurate.

PeterPiperPickedSeaShells · 04/07/2018 17:58

Technically only red, green & clear affect the sats probe (I believe it is do with the spectrum of light). But I'm sure IF you were to go for a section, they would remove it regardless of colour, just to be extra safe

I’ve had surgery before and they haven’t minded my nail polish so I really wouldn’t worry about it.

SomebodysNotInBedYet · 04/07/2018 22:43

I had dreadful chipped nails when I delivered DD Blush straightforward vaginal birth.

greendale17 · 04/07/2018 22:49

Really? Would you want the medical staff to waste time in an emergency to remove your nail varnish

PatsyStone39 · 05/07/2018 08:54

I had surgery recently and was made to remove my nail varnish. The reason they gave was, during surgery, the first thing to turn blue if your oxygen levels drop are your nail beds, so they like to keep a close eye on them. It was only my fingers though, my toes were fine to be painted.

I still plan to have to polish on mine at my due date, but i'll maybe add a pack of varnish remover wipes to my hospital bag, just in case.

Ginger1982 · 05/07/2018 09:43

Trust me, the state of your fingers and toes will be the last thing on your mind!

Girlwiththearabstrap · 05/07/2018 09:56

I was induced with painted nails and toenails both times. Wasn't an issue. And contrary to the melodrama of previous posts, in my first birth, medical staff weren't running around looking for nail varnish remover when it became an emergency. The nail varnish didn't make a difference.

TinyTerror1 · 05/07/2018 10:07

As PP said, it is because your nails turn blue so the anaesthetist likes to be able to keep an eye on them. But it is your fingernails not toenails, and only applies if you are under general anaesthetic which is rare even for an emcs.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/07/2018 11:03

You could put it on now, and you'll have plenty of time to take it off when labour starts.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 06/07/2018 19:43

I think that they need to be able to see either your fingers or your toes. I had an emergency c section early and had shellac on my toes which they did nothing about.
