I’m almost 24 weeks pregnant. I was overweight before I got pregnant, and for the past month or so I’ve not been able to get about much due to SPD.

I’ve put on a stone already Sad Blush

It’s too much considering my bmi was 31 before I got pregnant.
I’ve decided to start counting calories and stick to 2000 a day and eat healthier meals and less snacks.

I’m determined I will lose the weight once baby is here and get back down to a healthy bmi of less than 25. But how much extra weight can I expect to put on now before due date?? At this rate I’m going to have about ten stone to lose, I had three stone to lose from my pre pregnancy weight.

I need some words of encouragement please

I will watch with interest because I am in the same predicament. I could barely eat until I was 17 weeks due to many, many food aversions. I wasn’t overweight to begin with but I have already gained a stone since the booking appointment at 12 weeks and I’m 22 weeks so obviously a stone gained in ten weeks Sad. Don’t want to gain much more.

emelsie · 03/07/2018 21:04

I'm 20 weeks and 5 days and have already gained a stone , I had very severe sickness at the beginning too , still have quite bad nausea now and occasionally sick, I found the more I ate the less overwhelming the sickness would feel and also bad food and lots of carbs seemed to stay down better ,only now trying to get into a better eating pattern and hoping I can sort of maintain the weight I'm at rather than keep gaining lots.

Yerp · 03/07/2018 21:12

I’ve gained 11 pounds since I booked in at 8w5d Blush

I don't think a stone is too bad actually. And a pound a week for the next 16 weeks would be only another stone ish.

A good chunk of weight will come off in the first week or two after delivery.

I was a stone heavier than I like to be when I got pregnant then lost some due to sickness. I'm about 3 pounds up on pure pregnancy weight now but 11 pounds overall at 27weeks. If I gain 1lb a week until due date that will be about 24 pounds and I'd expect most of that to come off in the first two weeks leaving me with the little extra I was wanting to lose before pregnancy anyway which isn't too bad.

Wallabyone · 03/07/2018 21:23

That's not much at all for 24 weeks OP.
To give you some perspective, I am 27 weeks pregnant with my third, and I have gained 3.5 stone. I may have excess water, but still, that's a lot of weight!

RandomMess · 03/07/2018 21:24

You probably don't need 2000 calories per day unless you are exceptionally tall!

AstonMartini · 03/07/2018 21:28

I put on 3.5 stone over the course of both my pregnancies. I was 7.5 stone to begin with (BMI of 18), so that was a huge amount of weight for me. I also had severe SPD, though I didn't eat any more or less than before I was pregnant (bit less at the beginning, but I was drinking olive oil from the bottle during my second pregnancy). My legs were like tree trunks, and not nice tree trunks. But it nearly all vanished as soon as they were born, so you may well find similar.

RhiBee29 · 03/07/2018 21:36

You're brave, I'm 23 weeks and terrified of the scales. I know I've put on but too scared to find out how much. I gained 3st with DS and lost 2st before this pregnancy so I was already 1st up. I've vowed to join weight watchers after baby is here!

Yerp · 03/07/2018 21:37

randommess I used a calorie calculator to see what I need to maintain my weight and it said 2050 a day. Maybe I’ll aim for 1900 for now? I am trying to be as active as I can with the SPD.

Thank you everyone I feel a bit better now. I just can’t wait to feel back to myself and want to lose the weight ASAP after the birth so I’m not overweight if I’m lucky enough to get pregnant again in the future.

Honestly with SPD rest rest rest it is the only treatment apart from an osteopath!!!

I don't think your weight gain is excessive but if you're overweight then you could cut down on calories further provided what you eat is healthy and nutritious. Surviving pregnancy without crippling yourself and growing a healthy baby is your priority though Flowers

Yerp · 03/07/2018 21:53

Thanks RandomMess you’re right that is the priority. And I can work hard to lose any weight I do gain once baby is safely here. And like twobambinos said even if I gain 1 pound a week (hopefully less) then that’s only another stone. I read online that you lose about 12 pounds in labour with the baby and placenta and amniotic fluid. So that’s a good start Smile

Have you had physio for your SPD? I had decent physio for DC2 and it made a huge difference. Between having DC1 and DC2 the pain never really went away but now, 5 months after having DC2, I am almost completely pain-free.

Pebblespony · 03/07/2018 22:11

Stay off the scales while pregnant. No good can come of it. I say this as someone who gained 4 stone.

Yerp · 03/07/2018 22:25

blue I’ve had physio, but nothing really helps much apart from resting. I’m seeing physio again this week so I’ll see if there’s anything new they suggest. What part of physio helped you this time? The exercises? Any advice welcome Grin

pebbles I kind of agree with you now! I’ve learnt my lesson Grin

My issue was very tight h strings pulling on the pelvic cage. Went to the osteo on crutches and was able to give them up. Please rest rest rest and do nothing to aggravate it.

TinyTerror1 · 04/07/2018 07:46

They don't recommend losing weight in pregnancy and the third trimester is the one where your baby is growing fast so you may need extra calories. For a BMI of 26-30 my Pregnancy Encyclopedia recommends gaining 7-11.5kg overall (around 15-25lbs I think). It was slightly less for a higher BMI but I can't remember exactly. As pp said a lot of it comes off straight away at the birth (baby + placenta + fluid = 11 lbs I think) and then your blood volume reduces again which is a bit more. And if you breastfeed that uses a few hundred calories a day. If you do decide to lose weight anyway then make sure you are getting plenty of calcium as baby uses around 300mg of calcium a day in the third trimester.

BridgeFarmKefir · 04/07/2018 08:10

I don't particularly see the point of getting on the scales when pregnant. You've no idea whether it's baby, fluid, or food. There's enough crap to deal with when you're pregnant without beating yourself up about a number on the scales. I say that as someone who is a bit overweight, and will need to lose some post baby. I'll deal with it then.

EffRam · 04/07/2018 09:39

I'm 24 weeks and have put on 19lb/9kg. I haven't had any sickness or SPD, and I'm really active. I walk at least 5 miles a day, I do lots of yoga and I eat well (ok, apart from the odd doughnut or 5). I don't think I could be much more active and if I ate any fewer calories I would not get through the day. My husband says, look you're carrying a baby and all its life support equipment. Baby needs what baby needs. Let it grow!

You're doing amazingly. You're growing a human!!! Make good choices (and that includes treats when you need them not just salad over chips (I always choose chips)!) and look after your body. SPD sounds rough! Give yourself some love. Mental health is as important as physical health.

Yerp · 04/07/2018 10:35

tinyterror I don’t want to lose weight, that’s not my goal at all, this absolutely isn’t the right time to start a diet. I just want to manage my weight gain that’s all. When I looked it up I should be gaining between 15-25lb I think. But I’m just a bit ahead of schedule there haha. But as bridge says I’ll deal with it afterwards.

I do feel I’m eating too much at the moment, mainly through boredom of being stuck at home a lot with the SPD, and I don’t want to put on excessive amounts. But I know I’m going to gain weight. I just hate not being able to be active.

Thanks effram that was kind Smile

OP sorry I misunderstood. When you said counting calories it sounded like a weight loss plan. In the third trimester they do recommend eating an extra 200 calories a day though so maybe allow for that. For reference my starting BMI was about 29, I'm 26+3 and I've gained 17.5 lb since 6 weeks. I'm not over the moon about it but as Effram rightly said we're growing a whole new person so it's completely understandable. Especially when you can't get out and exercise at all! X

lemonnmeringuepie · 04/07/2018 11:07

My BMI was 32 and I've put on 15lbs, 27weeks now. Which I thought wasn't too bad! I had twins last year and put 3.5 stone on! No more babies for me, can't wait to get back to my pre - pre pregnancy weight!

lemonnmeringuepie · 04/07/2018 11:08

I know it's easy to say but please try not to worry! You are growing a human, try give yourself a break xxx

EKmum15 · 04/07/2018 11:16

I was 9st10lb when I got pregnant and when I gave birth I was 15st4lb. I’m now 11st and my son is 2 and a half

lemontree22 · 04/07/2018 13:13

I put on 4 stone when I was pregnant!! Looking back it was a lot of water weight and I dropped the other weight quickly. Try not to worry too much, your body is doing an amazing thing Thanks
