Hi
I’ve been suffering terribly with hayfever. But who hasn’t.....
I’m 15 weeks pregnant and managing ok during the day but at night I’m blocking up and not sleeping.
My local pharmacy have given me Prevalin allergy nasal spray.
It says it’s safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women but I’m so nervous of taking anything.
Have any of you tried it and been ok and us it worked for you?
Thanks in advance x

I bought it a couple of weeks ago as I'm breastfeeding and going mad with my hay fever . It's bizarre it's like a minty menthol spray gel up your nose and to be honest it burns when it goes up and made me sneeze a lot and I wondered if any actually stayed in but once I'd calmed down from the original squirt I did have a slightly less sneezy runny nose for a few hours. To be honest though haven't used it much because the burning sneeze fest has put me off and it cost me a tenner Shock

Thanks Hun.
Oh my god your completely right. I thought sod it, and just tried it and it burnt and made me sneeze 3 times. Now my eyes are watering and I want to blow my nose. 😂
Well I’m going to persist and see if it gets easier and starts to work coz anything has to be better then not sleeping at all during the night. X x

I used this last year while still breastfeeding and I did find it worked well after a few doses..certainly suffered much less than this year when I have the full arsenal of meds (though from all accounts pollen count is crazy high this year).
Hope it gives you some relief!

I've since been to Sr and he told me Loratidine is safe to use so I've started on that

Vanillaradio · 03/07/2018 14:24

It didn't work for me at all. Dr told me that beconase was fine, also Piriton it's worth speaking to your Gp as they may be happy to prescribe stuff a pharmacist will refuse to sell you..

Didn't work for me at all unfortunately Sad

I found it great, once I got over the sensation of huffing spearmint toothpaste. Really reduced the symptoms

MarthaArthur · 03/07/2018 16:04

I love the pepperminty smell tbh. My problem is after a week the spray bit stopped working

Havetothink · 03/07/2018 17:49

I use it every morning, I hate nasal sprays but it has really made a difference and has far less chemicals than beconaise (which I tried but made me sick) it also smells better than beconaise. You do have to use it before your symptoms really kick in to get the most benefit.

I tried it and hated it. It felt like I was just squirting more permanent bogies up my nose. I swear that it made it up to my sinuses and gave me a headache. (Although I did enjoy the way it smelt). I think the Prevalin stuff doesn't have anything in it that passes into your blood stream/past the placenta, so that's why they can market it as 100% safe for pregnant women. Don't suffer with your hayfever, that's not going to be good for you or baby.

On the advice of a doctor, I started on cetrizine, which is what I usually take - loratadine makes me drowsy.

Cetrizine/loratidine have been used by widely by pregnant women with no issues but there have been limited studies done - there's been more done on loratidine, which is why that's recommended first.

This is a link to the NHS's advice, if you've not found it already:
www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/pregnancy/can-i-take-hay-fever-medicine-during-pregnancy/

Unfortunately, they recommend not taking it when breastfeeding, which is maybe going to be next summer's problem...

Wow thanks ladies for your advice.
I will persist with the spray since some of you did find it worked but if it doesn’t help then I will go to the doctor. I know there are things they can prescribe. I’m just so nervous with taking anything x

@MagicalCreatures you can also use the Beconase spray, which is steroid based. The sprays you need to avoid are anything containing decongestants.

I found I couldn't get on with the Prevalin giving me minty sinuses, but some of the other pregnant women I know are finding it really helps, especially applying it before they get sniffly.
