'Javelin arse' / Braxton Hicks?

Currently 27 +5, haven't knowingly felt any Braxton Hicks during my pregnancy so far...

I was out and about earlier and suddenly got the mother of all 'severe period pains', coupled with 'javelin arse'. This lasted a good couple of minutes, eased off when I sat down, but I had mild twinges on and off for a couple of hours.

Has anyone else felt this? Does it sound like Braxton Hicks or something else?

Baby has been moving as normal, no UTI symptoms (and urine sample was clear when I saw the midwife on Friday) and I've felt absolutely fine (no twinges) since 4 pm, so I'm not worried as such, just curious!

Ooh I don’t know. I’ve only ever had javelin arse when I’m on my period.

Could it have been really fucking painful trapped wind?

Is it your first baby? I think this is more common in subsequent pregnancies and often comes on when you are more active. Sitting down and resting usually resolves it.

I had that for about 6 weeks before DD arrived. Someone somewhere advised me it was affectionately known as "dagger fanny".

Definitely not trapped wind (I wondered about that at the time...)!

This is my first baby.

I love that description.... Dagger fanny! Grin

Annoyingly, since writing my original post I've had some more twinges... So on a hunch I've had a quick look at my notes and it's been recorded that my urine sample was positive for leucocytes at my last appointment.
A student midwife led the appointment and mentioned that something 'minor' showed up but seemed concerned about thrush and keeping an eye on whether I develop symptoms... I actually double checked whether anything showed up regarding glucose or UTI markers and she said no. She wasn't corrected by my named midwife. I might mention it during my next appointment as I feel slightly misled as to what to keep an eye out for!

I've called the 24/7 pregnancy advice line for my area, just in case I should be worried about the pains, however the midwife was unconcerned and suggested an urgent GP appointment for tomorrow (saying pains + leucocytes = probable UTI), so that's somewhat reassuring.

Leukocytes are common especially if you have discharge...yuck I know. But sure that the pains are totally normal as get them often and around same stage as you

I’ve heard of fanny daggers... but javelin arse is new to me!

Both excellent descriptive terms 👌

Just had my urine tested again - totally clear - no UTI.

I now have a constant aching back, constant period 'ache' and irregular painful cramps. Advice is to call the midwife advice line again, which I'll do in a moment. Baby is quieter than usual today and something just doesn't feel quite right. Hopefully I'll have answers soon...

In the last weeks of pregnancy I didn't think I was having any Braxton-Hicks, but I was getting lots of arse stabs. I thought they were to do with constipation or something.

Then when I was induced it turned out that ALL my contractions felt like rear-end impalement. Not in the belly at all. So I think they were Brixton-Hicks all along.

Poppins2016 · 03/07/2018 10:28

Turns out it was Braxton Hicks!

Spoke to the midwife who advised me to come in. Baby perked up as soon as we reached the hospital yesterday (of course...), but was monitored on the CTG for half an hour anyway. Registrar saw me and was happy that it was just Braxton Hicks (and the additional ache is probably my muscles recovering).
