Blankets for cot and pram?

I’m due twins in September. They are my first babies and I’m really confused as to what blankets/sheets to buy for their cots and pram.

For the cot I know you need fitted sheets for the mattress, but I’ve also read you need flat sheets to cover the babies. Is that correct? I know you layer them according to temperature, but what sort of blankets should I use? Cellular? Cotton? I want to put them in sleeping bags when they are bigger, but anticipating them being too small at first.

With regards to pram I have no idea what blankets to use. I’d like to minimise fiddling about time if possible as I’ll have two to wrangle with. The pram is an icandy peach blossom twin if that makes any difference to suggestions.

Thank you in advance for any helpSmile

We have cellular blankets but DS hates them so we ended up getting Swaddle Up sleeping bags as he can't kick them off.

Try star wraps from tuppence and crumble for the pram - they are very easy to get on and off without waking a baby so you can adjust their temperature quickly if you go inside.

Otherwise cotton cellular blankets, wool blankets, fleece blankets are all fine.

And I’m sure we had sleeping bags right from the start - they were maybe called swaddling bags?

Icklepickle101 · 28/06/2018 08:09

We used sleeping bags in bed from day 1. Up to around 3 months they were gro swaddles (bought in eBay to save a fortune!) and then grobags which don’t have to be made by ‘gro’

In the pram we just used whatever blanket was to hand but I preferred a snowsuit type outfit to save blankets being kicked/falling off. Not sure how faffy it would be with 2 though. Did the pram come with a footmuff?

Use sleeping bags. Much easier!

ijustwannadance · 28/06/2018 08:14

Please don't use fleece type blankets on small babies, the fabric can cause them to overheat.
Use cellular blankets and natural fabrics and layer if needed or sleepbags in correct tog.

We use cellular mostly, but have some wool and fleece for when it's cooler and little knitted and crocheted ones for the car seat. There are some nice cellular ones from tesco which are a fiver each. We have three of them - cot, moses basket and pram. We have sleeping bags too but haven't bothered with them yet. Easier to remove layers with blankets.

Thank you for the replies everyoneSmile

I’d prefer to put them straight into sleeping bags, but I'm not sure they will be big enough. I’ve been told as they are twins they will probably be smaller than normal.

Gro swaddles look great, as do the star wrapsSmile

I haven't used sleeping bags as the baby can't get them off if they get too hot. Also it gets expensive as you need several of them in different sizes as they grow.

Hotchocolate86 · 28/06/2018 17:39

You can get something called a gro snug now which are sleeping bags for newborns. I think they can also be used with the arms tucked in as a swaddle but I used them as a sleeping bag with arms out and thought they were fantastic. I much prefer sleeping bags to blankets as I am a worrier and just worried my baby would somehow kick them over his face or something.

I did use cellular blankets for the day though in the pram or for daytime sleeping when I could keep an eye on him.

Got snug can fit a baby as small as 5lb, we had a premie and by the time she got out of hospital it was only a couple of weeks before she was big enough for the gro bag- SO much easier than faffing with swaddling!

jamoncrumpets · 28/06/2018 17:53

My 2 week old is currently in a Swaddle Me summer swaddle wrap, which is made of stretchy t shirt material. It's plenty warm enough for this hot weather, but you could easily layer a baby up under there in Sept/Oct. She sleeps much better while swaddled because her arms and legs flail all over the place.

Bluebirdsky · 28/06/2018 18:07

I am only having one baby but I have got a selection of different blankets (some I have bought and some gifts) cellular, cotton and fleece and I also have the gro-snug bags that @Hotchocolate86 has posted the link to above. I got three of these from a selling sight that had never been used and was much cheaper than buying from the website.
Mothercare also do 'starter sets' of bedding for all different types of cot, cot bed, Moses basket, bedside crib etc. These are regularly on offer in the Mothercare sales so worth keeping an eye out for.

The star shaped wraps are good that Tuppence and Crumble do but for a bit more money I have recently found a brand called Stars and Snuggles and these are great for a pram but also crash tested so can be used in a car seat so are multi use - and likewise have no fiddly buttons etc. They do them in cotton and fleece. I have just bought the cotton one..... I am due in two weeks!!! 😁
