Does labour start before waters break?

Hi,

I'm at the very end of my pregnancy and just wondering if the waters break first or contractions or what order it usually goes? If any?

I have one daughter but she's almost 11 and I was induced with her so never really got to know what happens as I didn't go into labour naturally... my plug has come away, and my baby is extremely low now so I want to feel prepared.

Thanks

Contractions first for me on both. My waters went as a trickle at about 4cm 6 hours into contractions with my first. My waters didn't go at all on my second and we're bulging out as I was pushing so had to be broken by the midwives.

Totally depends unfortunately as waters could break then 24hra if nothing happens it's normally induction but I was induced with first and I defo had contractions before water broke.

DS1 - waters didn’t break until I was 9cm and nearly pushing. Labour started with contractions.

DS2 - waters broke spontaneously before any other sign of labour, no contractions or anything

So could be either!!

Both of my labours, waters went just before pushing when I was 10cm

YorkieDorkie · 25/06/2018 19:55

Contractions began days and hours before my waters went. With DC2 I was seconds away from pushing when they went all over the delivery room.

Yes, I think it's quite common for labour to start first and some with no breaking of waters until the moment of birth! Good luck with your impending labour and new arrival!

Lemontwist · 25/06/2018 19:56

I had my waters broken by the midwife when I was well into labour for both my DC.

Every pregnancy is different, but for me my waters didn't break until my DS was crowning. Just contractions for me until pushing!

EekThreek · 25/06/2018 19:58

With dd1 the MWs broke my waters at 7cm as they were stopping me contracting properly.

With ds they broke after 12 hours of contractions.

With dd2 they broke first, and I had to have my contractions helped along with synto as there was meconium in them.

I've had a real mixed bag!

boatyroo · 25/06/2018 19:59

My waters broke suddenly with no other signs then contractions started about 12 hours later. I would have been induced after 24 hours if they hadn't started.
So could be either!

I was having contractions for days before my waters broke. Midwife was just about to break my waters when they went naturally, think I was scared of her breaking them and that's why they went before she did 😂

almostmumtotwo · 25/06/2018 20:00

Oh, such a mixture of different labours. Thank you for your responses everyone. I guess it could just be a mixture then and I won't know what to expect first but to be wary of both contractions and waters breaking.

My waters didn't break until I was fully dilated. Everyone is different!!

TheCatFromOuterSpace · 25/06/2018 20:03

Waters broke first for me in both of my labours. However I am told that only happens about one time out of ten, so you are more likely to have contractions first.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 25/06/2018 20:06

Mixture for me, too.

DS1 my waters broke and it started labour, or at least it started me feeling contractions.

DS2 strong contractions first, waters broke a couple of minutes before he was born.

DS3 lots of Braxton Hicks, no pain. Waters broke while I was asleep, strong contractions immediately and DS3 was born 20 minutes later.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 25/06/2018 20:16

My waters had to be broken by midwife. I'd been in labour for nearly 2 days at that point!

LyricalDanceFlap · 25/06/2018 20:23

Mine were broken for me after I was induced with DS. With DD they broke about 11 hours after I’d been in labour, and she popped out about an hour later. The fluid burst all over my lovely white surgical stockings, and I remember asking for fresh ones shortly after I’d been wheeled up on to the ward as they were so gross!

shonkyklingonmakeup · 25/06/2018 20:28

Mine were broken incidentally when the midwife put a fetal monitoring cup on the baby's head. I'd been contracting for a couple of hours by then.

SoyDora · 25/06/2018 20:30

With my first the midwife broke my waters around 24 hours into labour.
With my second they broke on their own when I pushed, then with the next push my baby came out.

Wellthisunexpected · 25/06/2018 23:40

Contractions first is most common, something like 80% of spontaneous labour starts with contractions (though TV and films would have us believe differently!).

Having said that, it was a huge gush of water that mine started with.

Mrstobe90 · 25/06/2018 23:54

I woke up having contractions and tried to ignore them so I could go back to sleep. 20 minutes later I decided to go to the loo in case it was just poop pains (sorry tmi) and my waters broke. They carried on gushing on and off until she came out 21 hours later lol.

I know of other people who's waters didn't go until the very end and some who's babies where born still in their waters. No 2 births will be the same so it could go any way!

Good luck :)

My water only broke 5 minutes before pushing stage and 15 minutes before pushing. I know that once they pop a baby will fly out soon after!

almostmumtotwo · 26/06/2018 08:24

Thank you... is it normal to end up with sickness and diahorrea? (Sorry about tmi) I have been up all night throwing up and using the toilet, don't know if this is normal or if I have eaten something that's made me ill...

Diahorrea is really common before labour xx
