Trapped wind advice - I feel like I’m dying

Hello

So I’m 7 weeks on Wednesday and have the most horrendous trapped wind. It’s so painful and uncomfortable. That combined with morning sickness and I’m really struggling.

Is there anything I can take and have you experienced this? Peppermint and ginger teas aren’t touching it.

Many thanks!

Get on your hands and knees then arch and slump your back in turn. Then put your face right down on the floor with bum in the air and wiggle/twist your bum from side to side. I would normally suggest sliding down the stairs face first on your stomach, but since you are pregnant, not sure that is a good idea!

What seatoski said. Except for the stairs bit Grin

Oh I remember struggling with that too. I found it was a phase though that went away. I used to lie face down on the floor with a hot water bottle under my belly. The pressure of the hot water bottle on my tummy combined with the heat helped me release the wind lol.

MammaBell · 25/06/2018 13:18

....oh and I'd lay off the carbonated drinks for a while lol Grin

Try gently massaging your tummy in a clockwise direction (use a little oil) then lying on your babn gently and slowly cycle your legs and pull in towards your tummy on each rotation.

Peppermint really does work but it needs to be the oil. Teabags simply are not strong enough.

Put 2-3 drops of peppermint essential oil in a mug of hot water and add a teaspoon of honey or sugar. My trapped wind normally clears within 2 hours of drinking this.

You can also buy peppermint oil capsules and some people swear by them but I’ve never tried them as the neat oil is loads cheaper! Can usually get both in a health food shop.

Hope you find something that works. Trapped wind is excruciating!

I actually found that fizzy drinks helped me. I don't drink them often though, so that could be part of it.

Lie on the bed on your left side, with your bottom leg straight and your top leg bent. It straightens out your insides and helps you deflate.

Squats have a similar effect (and are good for your pelvic floor)

Verbena37 · 25/06/2018 14:36

I would double check at GP that it is definitely trapped wind.

The first symptoms of gallstones/gall bladder attack can feel like trapped wind under your rib cage. So if pain /trapped wind feeling is higher than lower abdomen, get it checked out.

Verbena37 · 25/06/2018 14:37

Oh and make sure you’re having enough fibre and water. Being constipated will make wind worse.
A few dried apricots, prunes, prune juice or dates each day should help.

I've always found an old wives tale inexplicably effective with trapped wind - cup of boiled water, drink it all in sips while it's hot (obviously not scalding, but as hot as you can manage). My DM told me to do it when I was doubled over with trapped wind and it somehow works for me.

Flamingo84 · 25/06/2018 20:06

Peppermint oil capsules are a godsend. I had terrible trapped wind and only needed two before it eased.

Also try living on your back, legs bent and raise your knees toward your chest and move them tighter and then further away. Put your hands behind your knees if it helps and I sort of pulsed my legs. Looks ridiculous but it really frees you up.

Another one is to go on your hands and knees, lower your head and swing your bum from side to side and hollow out your back.

Rocking back and forth when you’re sat on the toilet can also help when the other two moves aren’t possible e.g. at work.

It’s absolutely horrible but mine cleared up in a few weeks.

sexnotgender · 25/06/2018 21:09

I was under the impression peppermint oil capsules were contraindicated in pregnancy?

twinkydink · 26/06/2018 06:15

Rennies are safe to take in pregnancy as well

laurG · 26/06/2018 09:38

How are your bowel movements? I found that I’ve gotten extremely bunged up very quickly during pregnancy. The wind really hurts. Try a dulcoease (pregnancy friendly ones).

CarbonatedBeverageFiend · 26/06/2018 10:30

Thanks all!

I’ll give all of these a try as I am pretty desperate although I’m feeling better than yesterday!

I vary between having constipation and very very soft stools (TMI Sorry!) as part of this pregnancy.

I do also know that I’ve got scarring on my bowels, in particular deep scarring on my sigmoid colon, an appendix scar and a hysterscopy and laparoscopy scaring as well which I don’t think is helping.

This is my fail safe constipation cure!

Daffodil2018 · 26/06/2018 13:37

You can have Deflatine when you're pregnant! That works well for me. Good luck!

Peppermint capsules work wonders.
