Hoping someone can help, I am only 4 weeks pregnant and my GP told me to stop all medication for hayfever as she has found none that she trusts during pregnancy. Is there anything at all someone can recommend, I’m at my wits end and not sleeping because of it?

Any advice appreciated. X

Your doctors is it talking cram, but she is maybe being overly cautious. There have not been enough studies on pregnant women (due to ethical reasons) testing most antihistamines, therefore no one is exactly sure if there are any risks. When I went to the doctor for the same reason she refered me to this website
www.medicinesinpregnancy.org/
I would recommend going on here and making your own mind up (Also handy for any other medicines you want to take in the next 9 month's!). My doctor basically said it's not been proven to harm but it's also not been proven not too. Therefore weigh up how bad your hayfever is vs any potential risk, but it's always better to go drug free. She recommended loradatine as the safest if I had to, but said avoid antihistamine sprays and eye drops.
At the end of the day for medicines in this unknown category it often comes down to how happy you are to take them and bad you feel.
Some doctors will be very cautious and will recommend against, those that say you can take them should make sure you are aware of any risks. X

I really feel for you. I suffered terribly couple of weeks ago and after a mini public meltdown my GP prescribed Beconase and then midwife and consultant told me that cetirizine is also fine to take.

You have my sympathies, I'm awful too. I've been using Loratadine as NHS website says it's fine. I also bought becanese yesterday as I was struggling so much (this seems to be working better for me).

Thanks @InDreamland it’s just horrible isn’t it! I will double check with my doctor again.

@MorrisDancingViv Yes I just used beconase last night and this morning as I already had it anyway! Thank you

It is just awful then made worse because yoy can't take anything for it. Mix it up with other pregnancy symptoms and you just feel like s**t. That's what led to my melt down in a pharmacy. I just broke down and couldn't take it anymore. Was so relieved when my GP then prescribed Beconase. Hope you find something to can take soon x

The point my doctor made is that no, antihistamines haven't been tested in pregnancy because we don't test medicine on pregnant women for obvious reasons BUT these are medicines that have been prescribed to pregnant women for c. 40 years and we haven't spotted a problem yet... that's more thorough than normal testing...

ExpectingFirst · 25/06/2018 12:10

I've been taking 10mg Loratadine throughout my pregnancy. Loratadine is fine to take, piriton is not, as pirition is a sedative type. You should be looking at non-drowsy tablets. I also use Beconase nasal spray if it gets really bad.
If I couldn't take anything I wouldn't be able to leave the house! Seriously bad sufferer here!
