Anyone else 'looking forward' to giving birth in next week's heatwave?

Due next week. I am the world's coldest person so haven't really had any problem with warm weather lately, but am slightly daunted at labour if it gets stupidly warm next week. Anyone else?

Also don't fancy the worry about keeping a newborn at the right temperature!

Me! Induction booked for end of week. Local hospital is like a sauna at the best of times. Praying for a bed near a window or a fan at least. It'll beat being extremely pregnant in a heatwave.

Also due next week, I said from the moment I knew my due date that it would be a blinking heatwave!!!

RandomMess · 23/06/2018 20:54

I gave birth at the end is the 2003 heatwave on the SE - labouring in the heat wasn't an issue!

My top tips for generally keeping cool - feet in a bowl of water with ice cubes! All curtains kept closed to keep house cool etc. I used to sit in a deep bath of cold water too...

I had my eldest during a heatwave years ago. Tbh the heat didn't make a difference during labour. Worst bit was having all these cute newborn clothes and it being too hot for him to wear more than a nappy

Funny, also made me think of being very heavily pregnant in London during the heatwave in 2003, I used to lie in a bath of icy cold water too (& watch my now 6'2" baby move about - actual hand outline pushing up once!). Good luck to everyone about to do it, it was worth it! I found the heat unbearable but you have every excuse to lie about now and be looked after, it is bloody exhausting being very pregnant in the heat. Once they're born though just have them in just a nappy & sleep with no covers & they're fine, nice to have all the skin to skin stuff with no barriers.

Oh and my DH bought me a fan into the hospital, was lovely!

HoneyBee03 · 24/06/2018 00:00

I'm due Thursday! I've packed a few flannels in my hospital bag so we can soak them in cold water and pop them on my face and neck. Hospitals are hot on the coolest of days, so next week I'm expecting it to be like a sauna!

Yes I gave birth during a heatwave in 2010, and the Labour itself wasn't a problem (well, it was, but not due to the heat... I don't remember noticing that). I do remember being in the postnatal ward and thinking it was absolutely boiiling in there, then getting discharged and walking out and realising it was just as boiling outside! I agree with a PP that it was annoying not being able to put him in any of the cute clothes I had at first, he just wore a vest for ages. It was nice when I had my second to be able to put him in babygros and snuggle up under blankets!

pS good luck with it all! Hope all goes well.

Yes I guess that it won't much difference since hospitals are always roasting! Plus I'm weird as PFB was an autumn baby and I was still wearing two tops when he was born.

I did this in 2013. It was 31 degrees.

Evian spray is your best mate.

The shower afterwards is the BEST shower you will ever have

Butterflyrosebud · 24/06/2018 15:03

Ive bought a water spray and one of those mobile fans! At this stage I couldn’t care whether it was 40 degrees I just want to have my baby!

Good luck Grin

July 2016 heatwave here - I recommend a small spray bottle of water, a handheld fan (I had a great rechargable one) and a desk fan, there weren't enough fans for one per patient on the ward.

Amazon does 'self cooling towels'. Definitely worth investing in, in this weather. Good luck everyone. ☀️👶
