I am 38 weeks pregnant with my first baby and my placenta is hyper mature and now baby is too big. So next Wednesday im having a sweep and then being booked in for an early induction. During my weekly monitoring ive heard other women have sweeps in the next cubicle and im worried. Are they painful and is it likely to work?

Would love to hear peoples sweep/induction stories!

I had a sweep at 39 weeks and didn’t find it painful at all. It was more of a strange and slightly shocking sensation but not painful.

Good luck

My only experience was that when I had an examination the midwife then told me she had done a stretch and sweep to help baby along as I wasn't dilating.... I didn't realise.... for me it was only uncomfortable in the fact they had their fingers up my vag.... once you get used to that it's fine... just take some nice deep breaths and breathe out when they go in so you are nice and relaxed... or as relaxed as you can be

I had complications but at 40 + 1 I was admitted to hospital again and the doctors told me to have a sweep that day and come in the next day to be induced. I was shocked to find I was already 3cm when they did my sweep 😕 it was uncomfortable and I had abit of slight bleeding but nothing scary. The lady who did my sweep had hands that resembled skeletor and said she could feel the head 🙈 We went to kfc straight after and I wolfed down a huge meal 😂 then went home, i put stuff in the freezer cos it was christmas and there was loads of food around. I prepped my bags fully, went to sleep and went back the next day with my bags and stuff. They popped my waters, put me on a drip, none of it hurt. The waters being popped just felt like a never ending wee it was hilarious at the time.
It got intense after they put me on the drip so I had an epidural popped in and a few hours later baby arrived.

Don't read in to horror stories, spend the last moments relaxing, preparing, cooking some tasty food, most importantly doing things you enjoy. Everyone's got a different story to tell but everyone loves telling a good horror story.

Honestly go in with an open mind. I was dead set against an epidural at first because I hate needles. It was the best thing ever id never hesitate to have another.
Be sure to pack spare clothes and baby clothes in case you have to stay in. I had blood pressure issues and stayed in a while so I was thankful for over preparing.

I found my sweep no more uncomfortable than a smear test. I've had two inductions - one led to a 46-hour labour, the other a 7-hour labour. Neither were traumatic or scary (but the 46-hour one was pretty tiring!)
