Have been thinking about Nappies!
does anybody use washable nappies? does the yukkiness of having to wash them weigh out any money saved (if any)
i know am thinking about this too far in advance as am only 10+1 but like to get everything sorted out in my head

Oh you'll be up to your eyeballs in poo anyway, so washing thems not that bad

No really bf feed babies poo doesn't smell at all really, it's when they eat solids it gets yucky.

lots of people still use washable, but they do use alot of water so depending on where you live the bad can outway the good.

Another good option is eco disposabile, such as Moltex brand.

whats that (moltex) and how do i go about getting these?
also i seem to remember being told a while ago about a company that wash nappies and return them to you?
is there such a company and is it costly?

Hi again m2b

I'm probably not that helpful, because I live in Oz. But Moltex is a german brand, and I think they are more readily available in UK than here, Do a search for Eco Nappies or Moltex. You can get them delivered. I think the Nappy Lady is a good UK site for all nappy matters. There should also be plenty of nappy wash services available. A lot of new mums request a 6 month supply for a present for baby. I think usually the cost works out ok even if paying .

I will warn you that my record of nappy changes for a newborn was 16 in one day, so that's when nappies get expensive, I was washing them, but washing nappies in the middle of one of the worst droughts ever, seemed to outway the good.

I had some cheap fitted flannel nappies too, which were easy to put on, but seemed to leak more than the old fashioned type. I think some of the expensive fitted ones are good, but quite alot of cost up front.

I use washable and really, really like them but I used disposible up until about 4 months until things settled down a bit and I got my head round using nappies at all and taking care of a baby! If I have another one I'd be ok using cloth from birth now that I've got the hang of it.

My experience has been pretty much only positive. Dh was a bugger to convince at first and kept sneaking ds into disposibles but even he now admits that they are as easy as reusables and just as reliable.

The thing is though that there are so many different types and not all suit everyone. Lots of things to consider such as how often you'll wash, what drying facilities you have, the build/weight of your baby, the type of fastening you prefer.

The good news is that there's tons of help out there. Post on the nappy board and the experts will find you (they'll find you here I'm sure!) - I've had great help from Flamesparrow who sells nappies. There is also a booming secondhand market (really, it's not as yucky as it sounds, cloth nappies wash up pristine) so you can try stuff and sell it on if it doesn't suit. You may also find that there are local council incentives to help you buy your first nappies.

I wash probably three times a week and I just bung in any other washing that I have to do (towels, baby clothes etc) so it really isn't that energy intensive. You do a lot more washing with a baby anyway. The nappies are quite expensive initially but they cost (each) about the same as a pack of disposibles and obviously last a lot longer!

Give it a go! I'm really glad I did.

You can get disposable liners for washable nappies, which lessens the yuk factor considerably! The amount of poo left on the nappy is minimal. You just remove the pooey liner and flush away. If there's no poo you can wash them a few times along with the nappies.

Have a look on the 'nappy, potty training etc' threads in the topic list -you will find oodles of information there and lots of people willing to give advice. Also check out the nappylady website.

i use a mix of degradeable disposables and washables. washables are great, although you might have to try a few brands to see what suits you and the baby. There's not much Ick Factor- at least you won't have a bin that reeks of pooey nappies. And a washing line full of washables is a beautiful sight IMO
