My Obstetrician announced that my 15+6 bump is actually the size of an 18/19 week bump!!

DH laughed and insisted it was going to be 10lbs plus baby. Obs said no more than likely Gestational Diabetes! What?

Does anybody have any personal experience/knowledge/advice etc....please.

Thank you

is he going to test you? if he suspects gd he should give you a glucose tolerance test

i had one last week (gd later ruled out) as i too measure large for dates

can explain how one works if you like

if you are diagnosed your diet will be stricylt monitored

OMG - I have a test on Saturday which I'm guessing is the simple one that you mentioned.

Does it affect the baby longterm? IF I have it - do I ahve it for life?

If you have the time I'd love a bit of info please.

Thanks.

15 weeks is very early for gestational diabetes. are you in the uk (not being rude, just that we don't use the term obs very much, & also in the nhs they don't usually test before about 28 weeks)?

sorry, diabetes. well, gd goes away when you give birth, but you are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes in later life. you need to have good control of your blood sugars to stop the baby growing too big, & to make sure the baby doesn't experience a sharp drop in it's blood sugar after delivery.

sometimes gd can be controlled by diet alone, sometimes you might need insulin injections. they're really not scary. you need to avoid sugary food & drinks (including pure fruit juice). long acting slow release carbs are good. lots of fruit & veg.

HC - very observant! We are expats in the Tropics.

I am not toooooooo worried (I don't think) at the moment because they do like to scaremonger here, BUT having said that I do want to make sure I know from the UK what happens. We are due back in the UK for 2 months in the Summer so I will visit my Obs in London and have the 'full monty'. It is private so I can ask for what I need - thank God. I have emailed her but of course when I need her - she's on holiday!!!

So really in effect it is me rather than the baby who will have potential problems later? Thanks for your help.

Is your OB not caucasian by any chance? Lived in Asia for 8 years and found that the size of caucasian babies was often a shock to those of Chinese or other Asian heritage. Whereabouts are you, out of interest?
