Pubic bone pain

Hi - I am almost 19 weeks pregnant and woke up last night with sharp pain just on my pubic bone. I considered going to docs later today - still having it on and off. Anyone else shed any light? The only thing I can find on advice sites is something horrible and unpronounceable (SPD?) which sounds nasty!

Could just be aches and pains, I have it a lot at night, can't lift my legs very high etc. Could be mild spd, I was told at hospital when i mentioned it that pelvic bone pressure is normal, but mention it to your midwife.

Hi there, I am on preg no 2 and get this, I had it last time and I am afraid it was SPD. I think there are degrees of it and all pg ladies get some degree of pubic pain as the pubic area is actually made up of 4, if I remember correctly, bones which are held together with ligaments that gradually relax as the pg progresses due to a hormone produced in pg called relaxin. a bit too much gives SPD. Mine was moderate last time so in the 3rd trimester I ended up having to wear a support belt which helped a lot, you may get away with just some aches and pains. If it is any consolation it is suppossed to be good for the labour as more relaxation of the pelvis equals more room for the head supposedly and it went away very quickly after the birth. I am 26 weeks now and it is just starting up again - I find taking it easy really helps.

Last time I went to my mw who referred me to the hospital physios who can check it out for you and give you some useful advice about how to manage it if it does turn into SPD.

Hi mandler, I've been told I'm in early stages of SPD. Doctor yesterday pressed on my pubic bone and I nearly shot through the ceiling! I'm 22 weeks. Does it hurt when you press on yours?

I think you should get yourself checked. I've been told the sooner you get physio the better.

Good luck !

Oh lord, sounds ominous! Is it quite common, and did your symptoms start small and get worse? I guess I will see the doc just in case there is anything I can do now to avoid full blown spd...

make sure no-one sees you!!

Yes it does seem to be getting gradually worse - sorry. Phone your doc x

Hi there yes mine did start small and gradually get worse and is doing the same thing this time. There are lots of things that aggravate it which I shouldn't do like too much exertion - eg was weeding the garden yesterday so is much worse today. High heel shoes made it worse for me (obviously) and last time it was much better when I went on mat leave and stopped communting. Also the physios had some good advice last time - one that really helped was keep your legs together on the same step when going up escalators or stairs - sounds weird I know but apparently that kind of scissor movement when you stand with one leg on the top step and one below aggravates it. They also gave me the support belt which really helped towards the end. Oh yeah and keeping both legs together and swinging them to the side when you get out of bed. Pillows help too and i lie on a sleeping bag now to make the mattress softer. Also, don't try and go round the whole of Bluewater (or whatever shopping centre) in one go like I do as it will be be playing up by the end of the day.

May be just aches and pains tho so get the mw or doc to refer you to the physios to check - they do some measurements to see how far you can open your legs etc without pain to determine whether SPD or not.

One thing to be careful of though - if you get it officially diagnosed and put on your notes make sure they put that it is mild only as otherwise they may use it to stop you having a home birth or natural birth at the hospital if that is what you are interested in.

Oh a**e, I feel really depressed now

Don't be depressed mand, didn't mean to do that - it is very early days for you and may not turn into anything - even tho I had moderate spd it was way down on the list of pain in the arse things about pg/childbirth - believe it or not, don't worry.
