Hi Everyone,

Some advice would be great please, I'm in the early stages just over 9 weeks pregnant! I'm abroad right now and have managed to get a cold and sore throat, anything I can do, to make myself feel better or anything I can take?

I can be with the cold, it's my throat that's the worst.

Thanks guys x

What country are you in?

Abroad is a pretty big place Smile

But just like at home the answer will be paracetamol and hot drinks with honey/lemon. Suck some boiled sweets. No proper cough syrups or sprays.

If you aren't sure of brands just write down "paracetamol/acetaminophen 500mg" and show it to a pharmacist.

I'm in Croatia, I didn't think I could take paracetamol? So any cough/throat sweets would be ok ?

Thank you x

My midwife recommended the cough sweets with the soft stuff in the middle (can’t remember the name) with hot water poured over to make a drink.

Paracetamol is fine.

Paracetamol is fine.

Paracetamol is always fine so long as you are careful to stick to max dosage. I would stick to boiled sweets to soothe rather than any lozenges where you might not be sure of the active ingredients.

Not all cough sweets are ok, any with a local anesthetic (ie Strepsils) are not safe , as advised by several pharmacists whilst I was pregnant and feeling rotten.
Get them from a pharmacy and tell the pharmacist you're pregnant, they'll be able to speak english and advise what's safe.

I have discovered hot water with thyme, honey and lemon +/-tea. The thyme really adds a soothing quality. You can buy fresh or dry thyme and brew it without or without regular tea. Then add honey and lemon. If you leave out the regular tea, then you can have as much hot water with honey +/- other ingredients as you like! But with tea there's a recommendation of limiting the amount to around 3-4 cups a day due to caffeine.

You can safely have paracetamol (normal dosing). Avoid preparations that contain caffeine.
