Dating scan - could this be an issue?

I have just found out my dating scan is scheduled for when I’ll be 13w 3d. From a dating POV, that’s fine, I don’t mind waiting. However, I’m opting for the tests for downs etc, and my midwife said these have to be carried out between 10-14 weeks. I’m worried that if anything comes up as abnormal, I won’t find out until after 14 weeks - if that’s the case, will it be too late to carry out any further testing? And what if I’m further than 13w 3d at that point? Will it affect the testing? I can call my midwife to check, but wondered first if anyone who’s been pregnant before has experience with this.

The only test that has to be carried out before 14 weeks is the NT test, which you will have at the same time as the dating scan. So in that respect, it’s fine. If an issue is identified and further tests have to be carried out, they don’t have the 14 week time limit.
How sure are you of the dates? Obviously it is possible that you could be a few days further on than you thought, which may be an issue.

Well, according to the standard NHS dating calculator, I’d be around 12 weeks 5 days on the date of the scan. However, I ovulated very early, and my early viability scan suggested I was further along than that, so I’ve been going along with the later date as suggested by the scan I’ve already had. Does that make sense?

Yes that makes sense Smile. I wouldn’t worry too much then if you’ve had an early viability scan to get the date.

The nuchal translucency measurement has to be taken by 13+6 in order to generate a result for the 'combined' test. After this point you can still be offered the quad test for Down syndrome, trisomy 18, and neural tube defects. If your results were to come back with an elevated risk then you might be offered further testing such as an amnio, or you may have the option of non-invasive testing such as Harmony either privately or on the NHS in some trusts. In short, you'll still have plenty of options if your pregnancy is dated later than 13+6.

Thanks both. If anything came up I’m planning on the private testing (not available in the NHS in my area), feel better knowing this will still be an option later on. If I become too concerned over the next a week I’ll contact my midwife to see if she can arrange an earlier scan.
