Nappy changing with minimal waste

Hello. 20 weeks pregnant with first baby and starting to plan a bit. I am planning to use disposable nappies but hopefully the ones that biodegrade a bit faster. I don't really want to use wipes that end up in landfill if I can help it. Are Cheeky Wipes worth it or a lot of hassle? Tips for changing a baby in a convenient way but without too much waste much appreciated! Thank you.

Worth reading this about biodegradable wipes and whether they should be flushed or not.. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/nappies_potty_training_etc/782876-Wipes-biodegradable-vs-flushable

AuntieStella · 11/06/2018 07:36

Sainsbury used to do an own brand eco nappy. Has it been discontinued.

Disposable nappies need to be strong enough to contain warm effluvia for a reasonable time (in cast you cannot change straight away). So they're never going to bio-degrade well, as that's just not compatible with their purpose. But IIRC, it's the very outermost layer that's made from a more degradable plastic and every little helps

Smellyjo · 12/06/2018 10:04

@zzzzz, so can you tumble dry cloth nappies? I always thought you weren't meant to, but I think that came from a friend who's a total purist about everything.

GreyCloudsToday · 12/06/2018 10:47

I can also recommend reusables, there are so many types. There are lots on eBay / Gumtree / Facebook groups if you want to buy second hand and try at low cost. Your council may offer a voucher to enable you to try some for free as well.

Cheeky wipes are ace (though I didn't rate the microfibre ones personally).

Every little helps

Mousefunky · 12/06/2018 14:18

I used reusables with all three of mine and will be doing with #4. Once you get into the swing of washing it becomes lots easier. Also far more economical. I had three in nappies at one stage so it saved me an absolute fortune!

So good to hear all your stories and tips - thank you!! This will be my first baby. Silly question probably but if they've just done a poo, is it likely they won't do another one for a while ie you could follow a poo in a disposable with a reusable and be reasonably (!) comfortable the next one will only be a wet one. Or is that extremely naive!! Haha.

Looking to use cheeky wipes... People who have used them before, do you carry them around already slightly wet? If so how do you stop them from leaking over all the rest of the stuff?

Probably a stupid question but the bag on their website doesn't look that waterproof to me!

Pressuredrip · 13/06/2018 10:29

Cloth wipes are easy by admittedly it's easy to fall out of the habit. I keep meaning to get mine on the go again and this has spurred me on. You usually only need one cloth wipe for even the messiest poo, compared to about 10 disposable. Disposable wipes just smear the poo around. I have never had cheeky wipes. My favourite are ones that are velour on one side and terry on the other. Cotton or bamboo. My favourite are from Wee Notions, not sure if they are still going. I've also bought some off various sellers on Etsy, and from a Little Lambs and also Bambooty. All of those have velour on one side. The bambooty ones are really big, I find them better for wiping hands and faces and highchairs.

My best tip is get a wipes warmer. No need for the ones designed for cloth, just any disposable one. Put some water in and your wipes. Saves you going for water each time and cold bums.

Efferlunt · 13/06/2018 10:31

We use pound shop flannels at home to cut down on wipes. Blue for hands and face and brown for bum wiping. For a poo or out and about we use the biodegradable wipes. I have a cheap sports bottle at each changing station to wet the flannel. When he was newborn warm water in a little thermos type bottle was nice.

We try to use the more eco nappies. They are a lot more expensive though and I’m wondering how much difference it makes. We do have cloth ones but found the liners almost as expensive as cheap nappies which put me off and to my shame they are not used much.

Pressuredrip · 13/06/2018 10:33

Aw12345 you need a wet bag for nappies and wipes. Bambino Mio do nice printed ones with clips so you can hang them on a pram or door and roll them closed. Planet Wise and all the nappy brands sell them too. I like the Karrimor dry bags from Sports direct. Each colour is a different size, the red ones are the smallest, perfect size for wipes. You can chuck wetbags in the wash with the wipes. You want one for clean and one for dirty. Don't bother with cheeky wipes.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 13/06/2018 10:41

I agree that better is better. It really needn't be all or nothing! I mostly used resuables on DS but always had disposable nappies/wipes around for travel etc.
I used fleece liners after DS was weaned and poos were a bit more solid. You could just dangle the liner over the toilet and the poo would (usually...) just fall in.
For wipes, I used flannels that I found in Tesco for 20p (this was about 11 years ago now so they may have increased in price!) I kept a bowl of water on the changing table. Dip flannel in water, clean bum, use a dry flannel to dry bum. I never found the need to add anything to the water. I still have the flannels now as dusters/floor rags!

Try to beg/steal/borrow used nappies and see what types you get on with.

I have cheeky wipes which I use with a pot of water, I am a

scrivette · 13/06/2018 10:50

Sorry baby pressed post...

I am so pleased with the Cheeky Wipes, I keep the blue ones downstairs for faces after eating and the other ones for the baby.

I do use a cotton wool pad to wipe the excess poo off first though.

I got them for DC3 and wish I had used them before.

ForgivenessIsDivine · 13/06/2018 12:31

Possibly worth looking at joining a buying group that buys from Suma or Infinity Foods in the South East Asia buying at wholesale prices might be worth it though often these are not cheaper than supermarket prices.

ForgivenessIsDivine · 13/06/2018 12:34

Well obviously not South East Asia... in the south east of England!!!

DollyDayScream · 13/06/2018 12:40

Reusable nappies really aren't any bother. It's not hard to use a washing machine.

Please do some research on them. Put your newborn in disposables by all means, but reusables are wonderful, cuter and softer to use.
