Too much folic acid?

My doctor has prescribed me folic acid tablets to take during my pregnancy but I also have folic acid in my pregnancy vitamin. Can I be taking too much and should I swap my pregnancy vitamins for vitamin B tablets??

Women are sometimes prescribed high folic acid when they have miscarriages - I used to take sometimes 5 a day - you excrete what your body doesn't need

Don't take more vitamins than you need though as there are some that can do damage in high concentration (vitamin A is one of them but there are others)

we were told the same about it causing tongue tie if too high. small price to pay though

It's fine to take both. Folic acid is water soluble and any excess will be excreted in your urine

5mg is routinely prescribed for women with a history of pregnancies with neural tube defects or overweight women

I would definitely recommend following your doctor's instructions

Thanks for all the feedback! Just to clarify: yes I was told to take a higher dose of folic acid due to the fact I am overweight. What I couldn't remember was if I could have a pregnancy multivitamin with folic acid on top of that or just a vitamin D tablet! I'm seeing a midwife on Monday so will double check with her but I'm definitely allowed the higher dose folic acid! Thanks for all the advice everyone!!
