Talk to me about Aspirin

I’ve been prescribed a low dose (75mg) of Aspirin a day by my consultant due to pre-eclampsia at the end of my first pregnancy. I know the benefits of taking it but I just can’t help worry about it doing harm to he baby. It feels so contradictory to all the “you should not take...” advice you get about medicines when pregnant. I know it’s the right thing to take it and I will take it but i just feel so uneasy about it. Has anyone else experienced this? Talk to me about your aspirin intake and your perfectly healthy children!!

Go with medical advice! I took it during my second pregnancy and didn't develop pre eclampsia.

BlueBug45 · 05/06/2018 17:43

If you do your own research you will find that not taking aspirin is more likely to lead you to an unhealthy/disabled child or no child.

Oddly most mothers who are prescribed it don't mention they were put on it. I had to specifically ask my friends' whether they were prescribed as in the last few years it is prescribed as a precaution against quite a few things. Yes all their children are healthy.

I have a disabled stepdaughter who if her mother's midwifery team knew her mother was at risk of a specific complication would have put her mother on it.

Btw the reason tell you not to take lots of drugs in pregnancy is due to thalidomide and not wanting to be sued. Some drugs e.g. paracetamol are safe in small doses.

Sunshinegirl82 · 05/06/2018 21:16

I took it daily from 11 weeks, perfectly healthy now nearly 2 year old!

CoodleMoodle · 05/06/2018 21:29

I'm in the same boat OP! Has awful, awful PE at 40 weeks with my first, and so I've been taking it since quite early on (16ish weeks). My MW told me today that I've got to stop taking it at 37 weeks, but otherwise to continue (currently 34 weeks).

Please take it, especially as you know how horrendous pre-eclampsia is!

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 05/06/2018 21:33

I was in exactly the same situation as you. Took aspirin and didn't get pre eclampsia with my second. Go with the medial advise.

flumpybear · 05/06/2018 21:38

I took it, loads of pregnant ladies do - keep taking

Waitingonasmiley42 · 05/06/2018 21:45

I had the exact same dose for the exact same reason. I now have a healthy baby and didn't develop preeclampsia this time.

Good luck

speakfriendandenter · 05/06/2018 21:59

I had preeclampsia in first pregnancy. Have just given birth to baby 3, I took aspirin from 12weeks and my BP was much better this time.
I was also on regular medication, iron, some digestive medication & paracetamol with occasional codeine during pregnancy and baby is fine. As long as doctors have okayed it, don't worry. Smile

mondler · 05/06/2018 22:11

I've just been prescribed this too and like you it feels a little weird (especially as she said the pharmacy probably won't give it to me when I have a bump so hubby will probably have to buy it for me!)

Just to check is any aspirin of 75g ok to take? They gave me dispersible ones but with my nausea I'd much rather just take a tablet but want to make sure I'm taking the right thing!

craftymum01 · 05/06/2018 22:22

They seem to prescribe aspirin for a number of different things. I was prescribed it for my 2nd pregnancy due to my first having a low birth weight. This sadly ended in miscarriage (before I started taking the aspirin) so they have prescribed it again with my current pregnancy to prevent placenta clots (cause of 2nd loss). Seems to be a bit of a go-to-wonder-drug!

TinyTerror1 · 06/06/2018 07:59

@mondler I've been prescribed by two different doctors and both did the dispersible so I think you ought to stick with it. Sorry!

Blissfulignorance · 06/06/2018 08:40

@mondler I had a similar issue, talked to my pharmacist about it and you can swallow a dispersible aspirin whole as long as you have a good glass of water with it. Makes no difference to the absorption as long as it's rinsed down well.

JobHunting4 · 06/06/2018 09:10

I swallowed the dispersible tablets. I was px aspirin with my second from very early on due to risk of Pre-eclampsia. Baby absolutely fine, however my Pre-eclampsia was worse than first time around. I'd still take it hough, it won't harm baby as far as I'm aware

BlueBug45 · 06/06/2018 09:47

@mondler my prescription wasn't ready so I was allowed to buy it over the counter and I have a visible bump.

zooz · 06/06/2018 09:52

I would follow the doctor's advice OP. I had pre-eclampsia and HELLP in my last pregnancy so I've been on 75mg aspirin since 12 weeks this time. I'm 24 weeks now and my BP is so far, so good (apart from it being high the first time I saw the consultant at 16 weeks) so fingers crossed everything stays the way it is and I avoid getting ill this time.

Scrambledheads · 06/06/2018 09:57

Took 75mg of aspirin and an anti clotting clexane injection with both pregnancies from positive test to two days before birth. This was due to an abnormal heart rhythm and a previous blood clot. I also took anti sickness for hyperemesis and heart medication.

Both my children are healthy and happy.
Congratulations on your pregnancy.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 06/06/2018 10:29

Oddly most mothers who are prescribed it don't mention they were put on it. I had to specifically ask my friends' whether they were prescribed as in the last few years it is prescribed as a precaution against quite a few things. Yes all their children are healthy.

I think that's actually (perhaps reassuringly for the OP!) because it's so not a big deal. I occasionally mention that I was on progesterone in first trimester but that sort of sticks out more because it's more unusual and taking it wasn't that nice. I've taken aspirin the whole way through (I'm 34 weeks now and told to take it to 36) and I just don't really think about it - it's just another pill I take with my prenatal vitamins. So none of my friends would know I've been taking it because it's so inconsequential.

southpacificgoat · 06/06/2018 11:15

I was told to take it I my first pregnancy due to age (40 at the time). Like you I felt really unsure of taking it, but did as told from 12 weeks. DS is now 3 and exceptionally healthy. Pregnancy was a breeze. At my booking appointment with no 2 I was told I did not have to take it (I asked). Apparently that was because although now 3 years older, it was not my first. I asked if I could take it anyway and was told yes. So I did. The next midwife told me I should take aspirin and so did the sonographers, but the pharmacist said I should definitely not take it. So a bit confusing on the advice from this time, but I am convinced the benefits outweigh the risks, so am taking it again.

EeekPreggoAgain · 06/06/2018 13:37

Thanks all. I have every intention of taking it. The PE at the end last time was terrifying. Like lots of you have agreed it just feels a bit strange. Thank you for all your reassuring posts, good to know I’m not the only one who felt odd about it.

I was given then dispersible ones too and was told “don’t worry you can just swallow it if you like”.

BlueBug45 · 06/06/2018 15:41

@southpacificgoat I looked at some research papers on it and the benefits far out way the risks for the groups of women they tell to take it.

SamanthaH92 · 06/06/2018 15:57

I am on 75mg of aspirin daily. Not because of pre-clampsia though for a small baby the first time. My sister is on it for high blood preasure during her last pregnancy. I never really asked about the side affects or anything. I was just told at my 12 weeks scan by my consultant that because my DD1 was small i should be taking it because a small baby indicates there was a problem with the placenta. I tried to explain that 1) she was early. 2) i smoked then (terrible i know have quit since) 3) i lost 2 stone from sickness! I'm now 33 weeks all scans have been fine apart from my last one where her tummy was measuring a bit big and a bit more amniotix fluid but not abnormal but at 32 weeks she was meassuring 5lb so they said thats what they wanted. I don't think they would prescribe it if risks where that bad.

whiteonesugar · 06/06/2018 16:17

I took aspirin in pregnancy after recurrent mc and the doctor told me to take the coated pill you swallow as its gentler on your stomach. they are both the same thing, I wouldnt have thought it matters which type you take.

aetw · 06/06/2018 17:24

It is seriously a wonder drug! I’m on it and have been since week 5. I have had three previous miscarriages and one ectopic, with risk elements of pre-eclampsia. I’m now 21 weeks with a very healthy girl. I wouldn’t risk it without. Go with the advice.
