First got infection back in mid June. Thought it was back ache as it did not hurt to go for a wee. Test done, got UTI, given course of drugs, test done, test lost, test delayed, still got infestion.

Dr gives another course of tablets, another test done and the results are to speak to Dr (got to wait until tomorrow now) which suggest it is still there. arghhhhhh

I have had no back pain or other trouble passing water, or any other sign there is a prob, have a pint of lemon barley water to flush out my system but it still persist.

Anyone else had trouble getting rid of UTI?

Not complaining too much as this is the only blight of pregnancy (so far at 22wks) I have had just don't want to keep taking drugs

By 'drugs' do you mean antibiotics? That is the only thing that will kick a UTI, I think.

yes had 2 different ones - the last with penicillin which was suppose to be more effective!

Scubamum, I've had two courses of antibiotics this pregnancy too. Apparently you can be more prone to UTIs in some pregnancies. Drink lots of cranberry juice diluted with water. That's really helped me (it apparently has antiseptic properties). Drink tons of water, generally. Oh, and eat live yoghurt to avoid thrush being triggered from antibiotics.

Hi there,
I think I must be the resident expert on UTIs in pregnancy!! I have had a bad time with them and the resultant kidney stones in my last 2 pregnancies.

It is worth trying to get rid of it properly. Most antibiotics are perfectly safe in pregnancy, especially as you are so far on. What has your doc tried? Have they had the urine sample tested to check the sensitivities of the organism causing the infection?

The problem with UTIs in pregnancy is that as all your insides are more relaxed due to pregnancy hormones, the valves that stop urine travelling back up from your bladder to your kidneys are more relaxed too, so infection in your bladder can travel up to your kidney, causing pyleonephritis, which can lead to very high temperatures (bad in pregnancy), and can make you acutley ill with vomiting which needs hospital admission, IV antibiotics, can lead to septacaemia etc .... all a bit alarmist and quite rare, but can happen, as your immune system isn't as effective when you are pregnant. And persistent UTIs can lead to pregnancy related kidney stones which I had and beleive me you dont EVER want to have a kidney stone!

Dinny's advice of cranberry juice is good, and if you can manage it, 8-10 pints of water a day to help flush out the infection. Often in pregnancy UTI's are 'silent' which is partly why they dip your urine at every visit to check for blood/pus cells/protein which can indicate an infection.

In the end I was put on a low dose of antibiotic every day to keep me infection free - it sort of worked.

Hope that you are better soon and the rest of your pregnancy is as trouble free as the first half!

love Susan

I should go assuming - the UTI has cleared (hurrah) but the bio yoghurt didn't work and theres thrush. So a bit of cream and that should be all better.

Didn't fancy the idea of a kidney stone, especially when BIL was thought to have that but turned out to be something a lot more serious (thankful getting better now).

Been reccommend the cranberry juice -just not that keen on it and told the lemon & barley was an alternative.

thanks for he comments susan/dinny
