Baby weighs 5lbs 12 at 34 weeks?!?

bowgumdrop2018 · 04/06/2018 13:45

So I had a growth scan at 32 weeks and come back that baby weighed 4lbs4 roughly and now at 34+2 I had another scan due to reduced movements and she weighs 5lbs12! Roughly! To me that seems like a lot of gained weighed in the period of 2 weeks? I don't eat unhealthy so I'm so worried that my baby is going to be far to big for me to pass as I'm 5ft3 ect , if it comes to it can I decide to have an elective section? As I struggle with awful anxiety as it is and always have done and I feel this is going to make delivery hard for me 😔 Please just some helpful and kind advice comments please I'm feelings really scared and like I won't be able to do it I have a fear of her getting stuck if she's big

My ds was 2lb 2oz at 26wks then at 37wks was 9lb 1oz and finally born at 41+3 he was 11lb 0.5oz 🙈

ItsNachoCheese · 04/06/2018 13:50

Also i had him naturally and did it on gas and air and had no rips or need for stitches. It can sometimes be easier to birth a big baby, my sisters had smaller babies and they both needed stitches but i appreciate everyone is different

Takfujuimoto · 04/06/2018 13:52

Growth scans can be very off the mark and after my first where they were very wrong I haven't taken them so seriously.

I know that some women who are short with very tall partners have had bigger than average babies, how tall is yours?

lostfrequencies · 04/06/2018 13:52

Please don't worry. The weight predictions are notoriously inaccurate so don't get wound up. Cx

Spam88 · 04/06/2018 13:53

The error on growth scams is massive so I really wouldn't worry...my DD was apparently 7lb8 at 36 weeks but was born 4 weeks later weighing 6lb14

DameLillyTillicut · 04/06/2018 13:56

Don't be scared. Those scans are only a rough estimate. I had a 4 pounder at 30 weeks but at 40+15 when he finally made his appearance, he was a very normal 8lb 7oz! If they were concerned that baby is growing too big, they would monitor and sometimes induce early Smile

Trooperslane2 · 04/06/2018 13:57

I know no one who has had accurate measurements pre birth.

I have no idea why they still do them.

pastabest · 04/06/2018 13:57

Firstly I don't know anyone whose growth scans turned out to be particularly accurate.

Secondly how easy you will find giving birth has very little to do with your height. You are best speaking to your midwife about your concerns/anxiety but that sounds like a very ordinary weight for a baby at that gestation.

I'm the same height as you and easily gave birth to a 7lb 2 baby at 39 weeks. I'm 39 weeks now with DC2 and their estimate was that this baby was already weighing about 7lb at 36 weeks so I'm expecting this one will be bigger when it makes an appearance.

Why are you having growth scans?

isambardo · 04/06/2018 14:05

I don’t know anyone who has accurate figures from growth scans. Both predictions I had were way off, even those done on the day before ds was born.

bowgumdrop2018 · 04/06/2018 14:13

@DameLillyTillicut so because my scan today was for reduced movements will someone still look over the results and see her weight and pick up if they are alarmed ?
@Takfujuimoto my partner is 6ft 4

@pastabest
I had a growth scan at 32 because my fundal height was 35 then they gave me a scan today because I had reduced movements at the weekend 🤷🏻‍♀️

The growth measurements are wildly inaccurate. They told my friend her baby was big at 36 weeks. She went over by 12 days and had a 7lb 1oz baby. Try not to worry

Grasslands · 04/06/2018 14:28

Don’t they put on half a pound or more a week in the last trimester? Sounds perfectly normal to me for the little one to grow from 4 to nearly 6 in two weeks.

NooNooHead · 04/06/2018 14:29

I had (undiagnosed) gestational diabetes with my DD and she was a heffalump when she arrived at 42 weeks.., she weighed 11lb 5.5oz! I’m sure if I had been monitored properly like I have been in this pregnancy for GD then I would have had a planned c-section instead and not been induced with an EMCS.

This time, I have had growth scans v regularly and last week measured DS at 6.1lb - hopefully for my ELCS in a couple of days’ time, he will be a ‘normal’ size!

Having said that, I’m sure as PP have said, these growth scans aren’t always accurate and can be out sometimes, but I would be asking about whether you could have a Caesarean with a baby large... obviously it is your choice, but personally if I had known my DD had been so huge, I would never have agreed to be induced. Even one of the consultants I have seen this time looked astonishined that I was ever induced and he said there was no way I would have been able to give birth naturally. I’m only 5’2” so not much under your height... but if you feel a natural birth is for you, then obviously try and go for it. Good luck! 😁

NooNooHead · 04/06/2018 14:30

*predicted possible large baby not ‘baby large’..! 😂🙄

DameLillyTillicut · 04/06/2018 14:31

Im not sure bowgumdrop but you could discuss the possibility with your midwife if you are concerned? Or ask to see obstetrician?

TroubledLichen · 04/06/2018 14:36

I think I’m the exception here but my growth scan was 100% accurate. I had two in my 3rd trimester due to a pre existing health condition and I was having an ELCS so we knew the delivery date. The consultant said at the last scan that the baby would be at least 7 and a half lbs, definitely not more than 8 at delivery; DD arrived as scheduled weighing 7lb13!

GreyCloudsToday · 04/06/2018 14:57

I'm on course for a big baby too bowgumdrop2018, both going on fundal height and extra growth scans. MW told me today that I might not be able to use the MW unit due to the increased risk of shoulder dystocia. Gutted. Next scan to decide is in two weeks (at 36 weeks gestation).

Baby is currently 90th centile on my personalised chart. I'm 5ft 3 and a normal BMI like you so dreading it!! My last baby was 8lbs 1oz at 39 weeks so not small but not huge either.

RandomMess · 04/06/2018 14:57

Scans are known for being inaccurate they are a guideline only.

My DH is 6'3" and DD was a surprise whopper at 10lb 6 but it was all in her length, I measured small for dates and am only 5'

Delivery was fine no rips or tears so don't worry about delivering a large baby. Friend had an early 4lber and had a very bad tear it does seem like luck of the draw Sad

Jammycustard · 04/06/2018 14:59

I’ve had growth scans for all three of my pregnancies. They were 100% accurate.

DustyMaiden · 04/06/2018 15:02

my consultant said they gain 1 oz a day, so that's not unreasonable.

Thesearmsofmine · 04/06/2018 15:02

Growth scans are just an estimate so I wouldn’t worry too much. Babies put on around 1/2lb per week in the last few weeks so at 40 weeks if your scan was accurate she would be 8lb 12.

I’m 5ft and had a 2ft long 8lb 9 baby!

firsttimebabybirther · 04/06/2018 15:51

Haven't RTFT but can say mine measured exactly like yours , almost to the exact ounce at these weeks! I'm 5ft 2 , I went to 42 weeks exactly with no induction and I didn't have a c-section! My baby was 9lb6 .

These scans are not accurate at all neither is the growth charts , they only way of knowing the weight of the baby is by weighing them and you cant do that whilst they are in the womb!

This sounds very easy to say but I nearly fell of the examination table when they estimated 8lb7 I had nightmares and everything about it and what would happen to me , little did I know he would be almost a whole pound heavier! I promise you will be fine and you can handle it! Lots of ladies have even bigger babies! (And chubby babies are lovely to squeeze Grin)

Congratulations!
