Subchorionic Haematoma

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with having a SCH. A lot of the forum posts I’ve found are very old.

Last Thursday I was 13+5 weeks (now 14+1) and I started to bleed a little bright red and then 3 hours later I had a massive gush of blood (soaked through my trousers) so went straight to the emergency department. They examined me and advised they could see no clots and my cervix was closed, all good signs. Had a scan later that night and the doctor on call could see baby’s heartbeat, moving around and plenty of fluid around him/her. Had to go back the next morning so an official scan with someone more trained and again baby seemed fine, measuring how he/she should be but I have a SCH vertically which measures 9x5cm which is quite large I believe. I had my first scan at 11+5 weeks and no SCH was seen.

Now obviously I’m hoping for the best outcome and I want to make sure I do everything I can to resolve it. I have had no bleeding since but just some brown discharge when I go to the toilet (not sure if this is a good sign or not?)

The docs have said I can carry on as normal and I have another scan in 2 weeks time, but I’ve taken the week off work and will be on best rest or modified rest anyway as I’m still quite sore.

Is there anything I can do or eat or drink to help?? Even if it doesn’t work it’s worth a try!

Thanks

Sorry to hear you’re going through this, it’s blinking scary isn’t it.

I had one and bled at 6wks - huge gush, felt like my insides fell out. Thought I’d definitely lost the baby, no way he could’ve survived that but had a scan and little heart was still beating. I then continued to bleed brown blood until 12wks and gradually the SCH has been absorbed and no sign of it now (15+4 today). I kept my feet up where possible, tried to stay as relaxed (ha!) as possible and DIDNT GOOGLE anything (dr Google will drive you insane!!). I continued going to work as found it a good distraction but went to bed pretty much as soon as I got in. I’m under the care of a private miscarriage specialist and they advised just rest and no sex.

I hope all goes ok for you, it’s difficult to stay calm but it’s important to try Flowers

Em2210 · 04/06/2018 08:19

Thank you for your reply! I think I am doing okay at staying calm now, but previous to this my family have had a very stressful 2 weeks so just trying to forget about that all now and relax. I’ve done my best to stay away from google but I have just been looking up anything I can do to help and I’ve actually come across lots of positive stories on different forums so that’s a little reassuring. I was a little more concerned as of course this has happened to me very late in first trimester/early 2nd so I’m not sure if that’s better or worse? Not sure how long these things take to occur or whether it was just missed on our first scan?

Yeah I’m just gonna stay in bed as much as I can and hope for the best!

That’s completely taken me back.
I had this too - mine was around 6/7 weeks (on Mother’s Day - great timing!) and I definitely thought that was it.
Went for a private scan and they could see two SCHs - one larger near my cervix - 9/5 as I remember - and one smaller and higher. Then another scan two weeks later and the small one had gone and the big one shrunk quite a lot.
They told me to take it easy which I did as much as possible - as pp this wasn’t complete, i had a three year old and a job!

All turned out fine though - the SCH was reabsorbed, although the brown discharge didn’t stop for quite a few weeks - maybe 8 weeks. DD is now nearly 2 :)

Although it was totally terrifying for me, none of the medics seemed that bothered at all - maybe it’s quite common?

Em2210 · 04/06/2018 08:35

Hey thanks so much for your reply, its starting to seem that lots of peoples do absorb and shrink which is of course what we’re hoping. Yes my doc didn’t seem too worried! She was great though and said she sees a lot and just to contact if I see any more fresh blood. They said they’d see me in two weeks because as long as baby is growing as it should, even if the bleed has got slightly bigger then again they won’t be too concerned unless baby isn’t growing or bleed gets significantly bigger than baby. I’ve actually booked myself a private scan on Friday as well just to make sure everything is still okay in there! As I couldn’t wait two whole weeks to find out. I know I may not see anything significant or a change on this next scan but at least it may give me some reassurance

Hey,
Yes if your doc isn’t worried then I’d hold on to that.
I remember as well being told, red blood bad, brown fine.
Really hope it all turns out well for you - sooooo stressful and scary!

Ilikecakes · 04/06/2018 08:49

I had this! Massive bright red bleed at 11 weeks and I was convinced I'd miscarried. Scan showed perfectly happy baba in there and a large SCH (sorry, can't remember the exact measurements but think around 10cm in length).

Bled continuously until 26 weeks unfortunately, period type bleeding daily with the occasional gush (and hospital dash) every couple of weeks - all terrifying and completely unexpected after three previously normal, easy pregnancies.

It's easy to say now, but try really hard not to worry. This is what I'm looking at now as I type:

Sorry, and best of luck Thanks

Ilikecakes · 04/06/2018 08:54

Sorry, back again! Meant to talk about what docs said! Yy to poster who mentioned no sex and as much rest as possible. I was working FT and had three other DC to organise so it wasn't that easy, but I really noticed a difference when I overdid it - in fact, those gushes I mentioned were nearly always after a day where I'd done too much rushing around, carrying any of the other kids etc. Work from home if possible, avoid lifting as much as you can and try to keep feet up whenever you get the opportunity.

I'll go away now and try to write my posts in one go next time.

Em2210 · 04/06/2018 09:07

That’s great thank you! I don’t have any other children so it does mean that I can really really rest which is fortunate and my work are really understandable so that’s good too. Just going to keep fingers crossed til scan 🤞🏻 Thank you

Hi i had this also same symptoms as previous posters mentioned with a gush etc, then had darker bleeding on/off,all turned out fine and had reabsorbed by 20 week scan.

TheBestSpoon · 04/06/2018 11:37

@Em2210, I'm in a very similar situation - large red bleed at 9 weeks which petered out over a few days (on holiday abroad, so got an emergency scan but no proper chance to discuss with anyone what happened), then another smaller red bleed at 10 weeks. Talked to the midwife at booking in when I got back from holiday and she seemed very relaxed about it, and just said not to lift weights etc. I've still been going to work (desk job), but otherwise trying to take it easy as much as possible and no further bleeding so far. First NHS scan tomorrow at 13+3 and really hoping it'll have shrunk then. It was 8cm6cm2cm initially.

Completely agree with you that information online is confusing and scary! Best I could make of it is that vast majority of the time it reabsorbs with no issues and relaxed midwife attitude seems to back that up. So just trying to put my feet up and not stress too much (easier said than done!). These babies don't like making it easy for us, do they? Confused Flowers Flowers

BellaBash · 04/06/2018 13:15

Hi all.
I'm in the same boat!
Had a MMC December last year so my 12 week scan this time around was a total relief. However, 5 days later - gush of red blood and a dash to hospital, and I bled pretty much all day.
Diagnosed with anterior subchorionic haematoma - 3cmx1cmx2cm, no vascular feed/blood supply and a low lying placenta. Baby seemed oblivious - rolling around inside. I was told by the consultant that this was the best possible outcome for a haematoma and to try not to worry.

Further fresh bleeding the next evening - back to hospital. Baby fine, heart beat heard, after I requested the doctor check.
4 days on, and I am still bleeding on and off - no where near as heavy, but still disconcerting all the same. Now under the consultant lead antenatal team, as well as all other normal appts.

I've been old to carry on as normal???

I'm terrified this baby will be taken from us.

CorianderDestroysFamilies · 04/06/2018 13:22

I had this, I had a small bleed at 7 weeks and then a huge gush at 10 weeks and had to be admitted due to amount of blood lost. Thought it was all over but the next morning saw my little bean jumping around with a strong heartbeat. He’s nearly 4 now and still causing us stress! Grin
I was told once I’d reached 12 weeks that I could carry on as normal and I had a 2 yr old at the time so couldn’t rest too much but when I could I stayed in bed or lying down as much as possible until the bleeding stopped at 20 weeks. I found if I did too much walking or going up stairs then the bleeding got worse for a few hours.

TeaPleaseBob · 04/06/2018 14:42

I had one, was spotted on my 12 week scan and I had a couple extra scans to keep an eye on it. I did have a couple of bleeds, one small and one much heavier.
I’m currently 38 weeks and 3 days pregnant waiting on baby to make an appearance. Mine seemed to be reabsorbed as no sign of it on 20 week scan

Em2210 · 04/06/2018 14:51

@thebestspoon @bellabash @corianderdestroysfamilies thank you for your replies! I really feel for you all as this is horrible.

I was told I could carry on as normal as well but up until today (so 4 days after big bleed) I’ve been feeling really sore and quite achy when I move too much but no cramps as such. Although I’ve had no more bleeding so I’m seeing that as a good sign?

My doctors didn’t say anything about vascular feed/blood supply so not sure that about? I’m just counting down the days until the next scan so I can see if it’s gotten smaller.

I’ve read that cranberry juice and vitamin c rich foods can help heal and extra protein to help strengthen the amniotic sac. Also kale to help stop bleeding. I’ve no idea if anything of those things work but thought I’d give it a try!!

Best wishes to all of you.
Just in case you’re staying away from google, according to wiki and occurred of an SCH has no statistical increase on the chance of a MC. Which hopefully is reassuring.

I know it’s utterly horrible when you’re in the middle of it though.

Hugs to all of you xx
