Can anyone recommend a good pregnancy book?
I'm five weeks into my first pregnancy, very excited but also very anxious and would like to feel more knowledgeable!

Ive really enjoyed and still am what to expect when you're expecting very informative with good detail without banging on

I am readying this www.amazon.co.uk/Positive-Birth-Book-Approach-Pregnancy/dp/1780664303
It's a very good read.
More about birth and the early days with a baby but would definitely recommend

Me and DP have really liked this one, we leave it open on the chest of drawers in our bedroom and have a look at the next page each day. Lots of good info and images etc.

Do NOT buy this one, it made me TERRIFIED of miscarriages and all the things that can go wrong, completely unnecessary and I don't think she's qualified to write a book about pregnancy. Made me really mad when I read the first third or so.

I know this isn't what you asked, but I've found mumsnet, my pregnancy app and google to be most useful. I bought a book by Clemmie Hooper but haven't picked it up since I bought it in December.

TinyTerror1 · 04/06/2018 09:01

I bought the Pregnancy Encyclopedia. It's a bit of a whopper but has everything I want to know in it and I love reading through it. I also bought the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy. It's a bit too US focused (not sure if I got the wrong version) but it does have a great selection of stretches and toning exercises.

I found 'What to expect when you're expecting' was good. The follow up one 'the first year' is crap though.

TheMildManneredMilitant · 04/06/2018 09:23

I found 'Expecting' really good (not the same as 'what to expect when you're expecting').

Thanks all for your recommendations, very much appreciated. I will check them all out. (and thanks for the warning about what not to buy @Eggoispreggo - I'm already terrified of MC and don't need anything that makes me more anxious!)

@bathandpjs what app do you have?

I borrowed a couple of books from the library to see which I preferred. One was a US author, for example, so their regimen of care is different (more doctor appointments etc.) so I took it back. I've used this one for general information (although some of it is a bit trite - "can I go ski-ing when I'm pregnant"? Really?) and this one, whilst "cheery" is an annoying way was much better about breast feeding so I still have both on loan.

Not sure I'd get enough use from these books to warrant buying my own copy though, unless it was v. cheap and 2nd hand.

bathandpjs · 04/06/2018 16:09

@jeanzbeanz I use Ovia.

lmx0 · 04/06/2018 16:16

@jeanzbeanz i use ovia too

Fredthespider · 04/06/2018 16:51

I've also downloaded Ovia and really impressed with it so far!

This is amazing as you just read a page a day! Very informative!

Expecting Better is a great book for first time pregnancy - takes you through a lot of the risk factors in pregnancy and gives you a straightforward assessment of facts so you can make informed choices about your pregnancy. I loved it first time round for helping me feel more informed and refer to it now I'm pregnant with number 2 when I can't remember what food I can't eat / birth options I want etc.

How to grow a baby and push it out was good. The baby centre app was also useful.
