Missed Miscarriage - help and advice needed!

Afternoon Mumsnetters,

I’m looking for advice on the next steps really.

I went for an early private scan this afternoon at 7+6 weeks. Sadly it showed my uterus at 7+3 but an empty sac.

I’m not sure of the next steps to take. My 1st booking appointment is supposed to be tomorrow. I was planning to take the notes the private scan clinic have written up for me? Would this be the right thing to do?

The sonographer mentioned that it wouldn’t be a classified as a miscarriage as I only measured 19mm and to be a miscarriage I should be 25mm? Does this mean anything to anyone?

I’m wondering whether I should contact my gp? The hospital in my area don’t give the number for the EPU. I’m not sure I want to face the midwife tomorrow.

This is so horrible, but want to be practical and not prolong this any longer.....

Thank you.

I would ring your gp as early as possible tomorrow and explain the situation - I don’t think the midwife would be allowed to read a scan report and tell you what action to take - I had a student midwife for my booking appointment and it was very much by the book (sadly we also had a mmc) - in my area you need a referral from the GP to get to the EPU so GP is your best bet to get things moving. I’m so sorry you’re going through this.

Thank you for responding so quickly.

I’ll call the gp tomorrow (I hope I’m lucky enough to get an appointment on a Monday).

I guess I could call the midwifes and ask them too. My brain is fuzzy, I can’t think straight.....

It’s a horrible shock, just be kind to yourself tonight and be practical in the morning xxx

My mmc was very early in the pregnancy so I was advised to wait a week then go for another scan to confirm it.
I was then given the option of waiting for the miscarriage to happen naturally or taking medication to speed it up. I chose the medication, which was a pessary administered by a midwife at the EPU.
The bleeding wasn't too bad, just like a heavy period.
Sorry you're going through this, I know how horrible it feels.

I would contact your GP as you will most likely need to be under the EPU’s care. I’m so sorry for your loss, it’s a huge shock I know Flowers.

Sorry you're going through this. Totally understand the desire to be practical and get it over with.

With my mmc, after the private scan I first tried the midwife but she couldn't refer me to the EPU because I hadn't had cramps or bleeding. She suggested I contact the GP.

I called the GP as soon as they opened and once I explained once it was for they gave me an 'emergency' (same day) appointment with the GP. The GP rang the EPU whilst I was there and referred me for a scan in a week's time to confirm there had been no growth.

The EPU scanned me and once they confirmed it was bad news, send you to a private room to have a cry etc. They explain the options - surgical, medical management or waiting for it to happen naturally. I went for medical management and chose to take part in the MifeMiso trial in which they give you mifepristone (or a placebo) two days before the 2nd tablet. If you're on the trial you come back in for a scan 5 days later to confirm the miscarriage is complete, which they don't normally do. The second scan was reassuring and drew a line under the experience.

Never heard of needing to be 25mm before it's considered a miscarriage. I'm not sure all private scan places have proper medical training so maybe take that with a pinch of salt!

Thank you @MrsSquiggler, I’ll cancel my booking appointment and contact the gp as soon as I can. It’s good to know what the next steps will be so I can prepare myself, and not be in a daze (as I am now).

Everyone has been so kind with your advice, thank you so much.

I’m devastated - it is such a wanted pregnancy, I really thought I’d be sharing happy news with family this week.

Thanks once again, it’s been very helpful at a time when it’s desperately needed.

Hi, I had a MMc this week and had medical intervention on Wednesday. I had a private scan originally and when I left that I googled my local hospital epau and just rang them myself. They gave me an appt for the next day (Tuesday) and we had a scan and options discussed then. I was offered surgical intervention but wanted to be at home so I had medical. It was fairly painful but I was okay with my dh help. If you have any questions feel free to pm me. It’s a really crap time but you aren’t alone xxxx

sugarnotsweetener · 03/06/2018 21:35

Hi OP, the midwife will be able to refer to EPU and the GP will be able to do this over a phone consultation for you too.
Although normally you can call your hospital main switchboard and ask to be put through to the ward/unit.
I’ve had 3 miscarriages (2 Mmc) and did one of each of the above options each time.
Sorry you’re going through this x

MrsSquiggler · 03/06/2018 22:08

It sounds like it's worth trying to speak to the midwife then to see if they can refer you. Though my one seemed only able to refer on certain grounds and 'private scan quite clearly showing that all was not well' was not one of them!

I can understand if you don't want to attend the booking in appointment tomorrow though, I can imagine that might be difficult.

Also wanted to say that my medical management was absolutely fine. Felt quite surreal but I was lucky I guess, didn't have any pain at all. More blood than was entirely reasonable though! Nice to be in your own home.

Good luck for tomorrow x
