Ideas for a small nursery room

I’m currently 35 weeks pregnant and in the process of getting the baby’s room ready. Although the baby won’t be sleeping in the room for a while I am keen to get it ready so I can start putting things away (it feels like baby stuff is taking over the house at the moment!). The issue i’m having is that it’s a tiny room and we have very limited space!

Would anyone be able to provide advice please on the most necessary items? We can fit in a cot bed and then have space for something else next to it. I’m not sure what’s best - a chest of draws with changing unit on top, a wardrobe with draws at the bottom/shelf on top, something else?! There is also a small cupboard build into the room.

Any help anyone could provide would be gratefully appreciated Smile

Definetly a chest of drawers. I wouldnt bother getting one with a specific changing top. For the first 6m we kept one change mat under the sofa (did changes during the day on living room floor) and one under our bed (night changes done on our bed). Once LO went into their bedroom overnight we put the mat on top of the drawers.

Shelf or two above the drawers for stacking nappies and wipes etc.

If possible to fit an underbed drawer under the cot put all the baby blankets/muslins/grobags in there.

Keep a supply of changing stuff (inc a spare vest and sleepsuit) in a little box downstairs and refresh it each day. Same in your room.

Ours didnt get a wardrobe until they started wearing school uniforms as up until then it was leggings/trousers/jersey soft dresses etx which all went into the drawers.

Hang an over the door set of hooks on the bedroom door to hang hooded towels, anything you dont want folded etc.

A really comfy chair! Clothes can be stored anywhere but you will definitely need a chair for when they are up in the night.

Ikea do a lovely slim chest of drawers, tall but slim, in the Hemnes range, plus we got a nice armchair for nursing there which was super dinky.

Definitely a chest of drawers, not a wardrobe! I liked my cot top changer, but it probably isn't essential.

We had a cot top changer which was a life saver. You could slide it along to the end of the cot bed so until our little one was able up pull herself up we left it on. There was plenty of space at the other end for her to sleep without her head being under it. Doing it on our bed hurts my back and is a gamble when you get a nappy off/wriggle/wee/poo situation. Defo set of drawers over a wardrobe. I must fed in bed to begin with but once she was sleeping in her own room a chair was good to have. We got the Ikea poang one. Cheap and springy so you can kinda rock a bit.

A cot with drawers under, a chest of drawers and a couple of shelves is all we used. Changed him on mat on floor downstairs and on our bed at night. By the time he went into his own room he’d stopped night feeds so no need for a chair, for the first 7 months he was in with us and just changed him on the bed and fed in the bed.

I'm my daughter's room we have a cot, large chest of drawers with a wedge shaped changing mat (raised edges so harder to roll off) on, a chair (for feeding) and a small little side table between the chair and cot. I wouldn't bother with a changing station thing or a specific changing top thing. I bought a bit of oilcloth and cut it to the same size as the chest of drawers top to protect it. My daughter is nearly 2 now and it's worked really well.

My son's bedroom was 6ftx7ft. We had a 'space saver' cot (120cm x 60cm), a single pax wardrobe which had 2 shelves and two rails, a third shelf would have been better, achest of drawers and 2 shelves. We got a cot top changing mat, was one of our best buys, and only £3 off eBay!

Thanks everyone! This has been really helpful and given me plenty of options to think about Smile
