Feet have swollen ALOT

bowgumdrop2018 · 02/06/2018 21:46

so I called the maternity unit and asked if this was normal to have sudden swelling in feet and a little in hands and they said it doesn't sound like preeclampsia as I don't have the headache ect but I'm still a little worried 😔 As they have ballooned up! Is this normal ? I would understand if it was hot but I'm not ? 34 weeks

Mine have been up this week (also 34 weeks). It's to do with the heat for me but also being monitored very closely for PE and on Labetalol for blood pressure.

I would insist they give you an appointment to check your BP and urine. Point out that PE can present without headache, visual disturbances, swelling etc and the only way to be sure is for them to check you over.

A bit of walking has actually helped mine not be so bad today. Try a bit of extra water and a stroll now it's cooler in the evening.

Chocness · 02/06/2018 21:53

I had this then went onto to develop preeclampsia. Not everyone gets the visual disturbances/rib pain or headache. I don’t want to scare you but for peace of mind why don’t you go to your local maternity unit and give a wee sample and get your blood pressure checked. I also had facial swelling if that’s any help as well as swollen hands. Hope everything goes ok.

TeenagersandFurbabies · 02/06/2018 22:02

Swollen feet and hands are one symptom of pre-eclampsia, but if it's the only one you have then maternity are not going to be too worried about it as its quite common pregnancy side effect. Try to see your GP or midwife so they can dip your urine to check for protein and check your blood pressure.
I had swollen feet & hands in all three pregnancies but only had pre-eclampsia with the first one.

bowgumdrop2018 · 02/06/2018 22:09

My next midwife appointment is on the 6th, so Wednesday should I wait untill then? nothing worse than being really worried and feeling like your not being heard 😔 so can they detect preeclampsia by protein and bloods?

It's a few years ago now, but I had swollen feet at the end of my pregnancy because I'd overdone things. The midwife advised me to lie down with my feet as high as I could get them.

Obviously if you have any concerns I would advise you to contact your midwife.

Mybabystolemysanity · 02/06/2018 22:19

I would ring them again in the morning if it hasn't reduced overnight and just say you want to come in for a quick check. Alternatively, you can usually check your own BP at the GP surgery without an appointment. Anything over 140/90 warrants talking to the midwife again. I keep an eye on BP and urine at home now, after having to fight to be listened to in my last pregnancy. Obviously, if you developed any more of the classic symptoms, then ring triage again before morning.

3luckystars · 02/06/2018 22:25

I’m not an expert, so please get it checked if you are worried!

When my legs swelled out, the midwife told me to rest them and put them up, and if the swelling went down in the morning after resting them, then it was likely to b just fluid and normal heat related pregnancy swelling, but if I was still swollen and it didn’t go down at all after resting then then I should definitely get it checked that day (and don’t wait around ever if I m worried.)

You don’t have to have ALL the symptoms to have pre eclampsia.

I hope you are ok and I just wanted to wish you well.

Funnily enough my feet and legs swelled really badly after giving birth, for a bout 2 weeks afterwards and I just couldn’t get them down, they were like balloons. I eventually found a cure, putting my feet in hot water for a few minutes, then cold water for a few minutes, and repeat this over and over and it really got rid of the swelling quickly.

EeekPreggoAgain · 02/06/2018 22:28

I had this and after sucking it up for a while I found I had pre-eclampsia. Didn’t have a headache. Although I did have a pain under my ribs - I just thought i’d twisted awkwardly - feeling like a turtle and all...Nope! Go get checked. Tesco/Boots will do your blood pressure for free of you can’t get to the Midwife. X

I'm glad you posted this as i was about to put one up! My feet and ankles started swelling yesterday, hadn't gone down much over night. They have gotten a bit worse today, can no longer see ankle. Hands were slightly swollen so decided it was best to take my rings off. I had my bp and urine tested thursday all fine. I was going to cancel my midwife appointment tuesday but think i will go see her now. If your worried defiently get checked. I'm on aspirin daily and from what i have read that reduces the risks of preclampsia x

delilahbucket · 02/06/2018 22:54

Mine did around the second time. I went on mat leave and within a few days of having my feet up they settled. They ballooned after giving birth though and it was beyond painful. I couldn't get shoes on, I couldn't kneel down to change nappies on the floor and it felt like my skin was going to pop (just to forewarn you). Get your feet elevated at every opportunity and drink loads of water.

bowgumdrop2018 · 02/06/2018 22:58

So if swelling is still present on the morning call maternity unit again? I'm so worried I'm actually making myself upset now as I have a fear of people just not listening and then something happens to my baby , can only ring maternity as my midwife office is closed on weekends? what if they say it's just normal swelling over the phone

If you are worried ask to go in for a check, your peace of mind is more important.

I had swollen feet, legs and eventually face towards the end of my pregnancy. It was my swollen face - which only my midwives picked up on - which pushed them to send me in to hospital. I stayed in for 4 days pre birth, with PE and all was fine. But the monitoring is so important if it does turn out to be pre-eclampsia.

Look after yourself and get it checked if it will put your mind at rest.

Wetdogloveshubert · 02/06/2018 23:11

So yes, ring maternity and say you are worried. I had my dd in 2013 when we had similarly oppressive, never-ending heat, which I am sure contributed, but getting checked out costs nothing.

ayedidye · 02/06/2018 23:30

I had the swollen feet weeks before my blood pressure sky rocketed. Probably 34 weeks and bp went up at week 36.

I was wearing skinny jeans etc and found when I stopped wearing them the swelling went down.

I didn't have headaches or visual disturbances and my issues were worse post natal.

I would say though don't worry, my bp was high and all they did was check me a few tubes a week before they put me on meds.

ayedidye · 02/06/2018 23:32

Posted too soon! Midwife told me that the swelling in the feet don't really worry them it's more the face and hands.

That was only 3 weeks ago that she told me that.

PenApple · 02/06/2018 23:38

This was what mine were like just before having dc3, and they were the same with dc1. I was panicked each time too but was told to rest with feet up (did nothing) and be vigilant about other symptoms.

It took a good 3-4 weeks pp each time for them to slim back down too, which was lovely 🤔

I developed pre eclampsia at 35 weeks, first sign was massively swollen feet, never got a headache with it at all. I was also breathless and assumed it was from baby taking up space but it was fluid in my lungs. Bp check and protein test are the only real ways to know.

Wetdogloveshubert · 03/06/2018 08:51

How are you doing @bowgumdrop2018 ?

VanGoghsLeftEar · 03/06/2018 08:55

Yup, got swollen feet too. Went to hospital, sent to maternity ward, +++ protein in my urine, baby was delivered by emergency C-section at 32 weeks.

Always a good idea to get your wee checked.

BrutusMcDogface · 03/06/2018 08:56

Mine have swollen too but I'm putting it down to the hot weather as my face and hands are fine. It is a common symptom of pregnancy. Obviously if you're worried insist on being checked over, though. Hopefully all is fine.

BrutusMcDogface · 03/06/2018 08:57

VanGogh - how swollen? Any other symptoms?

MrsMrsMrsMrs · 03/06/2018 09:01

I’ve had Pre eclampsia twice, babies born 37 and 33 weeks. On neither occasion did I have a headache. On first child it was very serious.
They need to check your urine for protein ASAP.
Do take it seriously. Hope it goes ok for you x

CLB1234 · 03/06/2018 09:03

I had swollen feet and ankles from 30 weeks with DD, 2 years ago. They were twice their normal size, c wear No other symptoms, delivered perfectly healthy baby at 40+2.

Get checked out if you're worried but it doesn't necessarily mean preeclampsia just fluid retention. Try ice packs wrapped in towels and elevating them.
