Previous baby small for dates

I was just wondering if anyone had had a small for dates baby but not been told? DD1 was 6lb 12 when she was born at 41 weeks, no one mentioned her size or that she was smaller than expected, so I just thought she's a dinky baby and thought no more of it. I had had 2 growth scans triggered by bump measurement that were fine (although the last one at 38 weeks said 8lb+) so they weren't that accurate! She has not stayed dinky and is 91st centile for height and 75th for a weight at age 3.

Now pregnant with number 2 (17 weeks) and after getting 4 appointment letters for scans and consultant (monthly for the last 4 months of my pregnancy) with no explanation enclosed, the midwife said I am being consultant lead due to a previous small for dates baby.

This isn't a problem and I'm happy to have extra scans and glad they're being proactive, it's just come as a bit of a surprise, I wondered if anyone else had had the same experience?

Same happened to me. DD was 6lb on the dot. Nothing was picked up during my scans to suggest growth issues. My bump didn't measure small either, I was huge! But I do remember the midwife who broke my waters commenting that there was "a lot of water" so that may be why.
When DD born nobody mentioned that she was considered "small". She had to go into SCBU with suspected sepsis but no one mentioned her size as being a concern or a factor in her needing special care.

So I was surprised when my midwife told me at my booking appointment with baby no 2 that this was considered a "high risk" pregnancy and I would have to be open to a consultant and have extra scans because DD was "low birth weight". I knew she was on the petite side but had no idea it was an issue. I saw the consultant last week (I was 18 weeks) and was told I have to be scanned every 6 weeks and they may prescribe me daily Asprin as this apparently helps with "growth issues". I'm happy to do whatever they feel needs to be done but I am a bit confused as to why it was never mentioned at the time! Confused

Yes happened to me too. DS was 6lb 4 at 41+3. Nobody mentioned that he was small for his gestation. At 3 years old he is now around 75th centile for both weight and hight and neither ever worried me. The first I heard of him being considered 'small was at my 20 week scan. The sonographer rather than the midwives picked it up and ordered 28, 32 and 36 week growth scans because of it. No referal to consultant though - and I am 44...!

Sorry, this is for my current pregnancy.

My first dd was low birth weight, this was clear at the time. She was completely healthy, not prem, we had to stay in one day to monitor. Nothing picked up during pregnancy.

My second dd was not low birth weight, she was 6lb 13 at 41+4 , 25th centile I think. Completely fine and we went straight home.

I am pg with third and have only now been told second dd was ‘small for gestational age’ which is completely news to me and so I have to be consultant led and have the growth scans, etc

I believe that there is a new growth chart produced which is based on mother’s measurements at booking in. This is what they compare the baby’s weight with to determine whether it’s considered small.

I am not happy with the fact that despite two complication free pregnancies and two healthy babies I have the extra appointments and uncertainty over what they may recommend. But I’m going along with it as I don’t mind the extra scans.

I think it’s ridiculous because the weight I gave at my booking in was nowhere near my normal weight anyway.

Going through the same now ds was 6lb when he was born at 41 weeks so have to have growth scans from 28 weeks with this one x

Seems I'm not the only one then, I wonder why we didn't get a heads up?

My son was born at 2 weeks overdue - 6lb 6oz. Like you all no one seemed concerned about this but I've just had DD and I had to go in for growth scans and in the end, early induction as they were concerned about size.

I think Trusts have become more concerned about size now, and potential still births. DD has health problems but not related to her size.
