I have just finished the congratulations chapter of my fertility book by Zita West and she recommends one of herproducts called Vital Essence 1 which is a mixture of Vitamin C, folic acid and other vitamins, but it says it is toprevent miscarriage.. I have had a miscarriage in the past so I am seriously contemplating buying them, but at £23 a pot I thought I might ask the question... what have you used??

I do have a healthish diet, eat cereal for breakfast, sandwich for lunch and generally meat and veg for dinner.. I have tried to eat more fruit etc, but I love pineapple but heard that it can bring on mc so have not touched it... can any one give me some advice on how to get through these next 6 weeks..!!

I am just going for the plain dull option of Pregnacare - it's pretty widely available, seems to have everything in it and is formulated for pregnancy so probably safer than self-medicating. Just bought some this morning - it's about £12.50 in Sainsbury's for 28 days if you get Pregnacare Plus which has Omega 3 tablets as well.

Pregnacare is good, I have to say. If you do plan to take if for the duration, it can be worth buying in bulk from the manufacturers as it will work out cheaper in the long run.

I also saw the omega 3 version in Sainsbury's recently but it worked out cheaper to buy omega tablets separately

£23 a pot !

eating a varied, balanced diet, with 5 + portions of fruit and veg a day is what you need, with folic acid supplement for the first trimester....

am interested that this is sold on the premise of preventing miscarriage. as far as i was aware, nothing can prevent an inevitable miscarriage

eating well, keeping hydrated and looking after yourself should be sufficient for a healthy pregnancy

fleacircus · 20/05/2007 13:48

I'm taking Pregnacare, you can usually get it on 3 for 2 at Boots. Claiming that a particular supplement can prevent miscarriage sounds like cobblers at best, exploiting people's fears at worst.

I agree, this sounds like a marketing gimick that stoops really low and is nothing more than a con, if that is truly what they claim these vitamins can do. Nothing can prevent an inevitable miscarriage, as was said by lulumama, since most miscarriages are tragically a result of abnormalities in the fetus which make it an unviable life form. "Magic" vitamins are not going to fix these sort of problems. Other health issues that might make a woman more prone to miscarriage are certainly not problems that can be fixed by a vitamin either, sadly. Definitely take some sort of prenatal vitamin though, especially one that has proper levels for a pregnant woman of folic acid, but these do not have to be expensive. Keep up the healthy diet as well of course, but it's still important to take some sort of prenatal vitamin. £23 is way over priced though, there are many others that are much more reasonabley priced. Also, that myth about pineapple and miscarriage is just that, a myth so if you fancy some go ahead and have some. The vitamin c and fibre in it are great for you!

pregnancare here too. £12 for 90 tablets

lulumama · 20/05/2007 17:33

re the pineapple thing

if you eat around 7 fresh pineapples, there is an enzyme that can help ripen the cervix, when you are at full term,

a glass of juice or some fresh pineapple won;t induce a misarriage

driving yourself mad, worrying about this, is going to stress you and make you feel worse !

try to relax and enjoy being pregnant x

I'm taking the Sainsburys alternative. It has all the same stuff as the more expensive ones and its under £5.

Caz10 · 20/05/2007 18:36

Pregnacare made me v constipated! (tmi, sorry, but I have heard from quite a few people that it did that to them). Have swapped to Sanatogen, no probs so far, and again it's better value if you can buy the big huge tub.

MamaMaiasaura · 20/05/2007 19:10

oo caz.. that might be happening to me too

missgriss · 20/05/2007 19:18

I agree with lulumama. As long as you have a healthy diet, folic acid supplements are all you should need to take.

With regards to preventing miscarriage, if it really worked, wouldn't all the GP's and MW's be recommending everyone took them?

Rantmum · 20/05/2007 19:21

I got some pregnancy vitamins made by Clearblue, the PG test people.

here

Took them during pg and whilst bfing (no side effects at all and, I think, helped with morning sickness which felt much worse on days that I forgot to take one.
