Babys tummy measuring bigger

32+2 had a growth scan today to see if baby was growing ok. Scanner mentioned that babys tummy was measuring a bit big. Went to see the consultant after who said the same but said she wasn't concerned but there was also a high amount of amniotic fluid but it wasn't abnormally high. Just on the high side. Again not too concerned. Baby estimated weight is 4lb 15oz, i go back at 36 weeks. Has anyone else had this? Worrying slightly after googling.

Yes! Can’t remember by how much, now, but it evened out and he came out absolutely fine :) I was sent for testing for gestational diabetes, as that can be a symptom, but didn’t have GD fortunately. Try not to worry- I felt guilty that I had somehow caused it (Google was not my friend...) but it was “just one of those things”.

Thanks for your reply. Yes the consultant did ask if i had been tested for GB. I have and the results came back no GB. Also no sugar in urine. She did say that measuments are not always correct espically if you have a different scanner each time. BUT i have just read it could mean a chromosomal abnormality and now I'm panicking xx

Yes I have. I had a growth scan at 28 weeks, was told tummy on 97th centile when rest of baby was below 40th.....
I panicked too, not had test for gd which I was worried about, but when I went back at 34 weeks tummy was on 84th centile.
I asked sonographer why baby had such a big tummy compared to the rest of him and she just said one of those things. She’d rather a big tummy than a small one as it meant placenta is functioning well.
Also, they got the tummy measurement when I was lying on my side, when I laid on my back his tummy was measuring below 50th centile so I don’t think it’s exact.
My friend was told she was having a much larger than average baby going off a growth scan and he popped out just under 7lbs...

Had this with DD. I can't remember all of the details but it did worry us - they said her "abdominal circumference" was higher than it should've been. It was something like on the 90th percentile and the rest of her was on the 50th.

She came out at almost 8lbs and was perfect. Still is at 4! I was also tested for GD, and that was negative. Try not to worry too much, although I know that's easier said than done.

Yes really struggling not to worry now. Natural worrier anyways 🙈. I suppose the fact the consultant isn't too concerned should ease my mind but it doesn't. Think I'll worry now till the next scan.

Honestly, try and put it out of your mind. I know that doesn’t help! But if they were worried, they’d be doing more tests etc.- the consultant will be very experienced.

The scans are notoriously flawed with such measurements (as far as I can tell!) because, as a pp said, just changing position can change things. Difference between centriles is small in absolute terms, so even measuring a few Mm out can change the results.

It’s very unlikely there’s a problem. Wishing you all the very best :)

I think i will go and discuss it with midwife next week. I'm now wondering how likley it is to have passed the 12 hour fasting with 2/3 hours GB test and no sugar in urine to actually developing it later. The only thing i have is thirsty a lot but i have always drank a lot, more so now its hot x

That sounds sensible. Hopefully it’s nothing! I’m sure they’ll suggest more tests if necessary or they have any concerns. Wishing you the best!
