How soon will I be offered a sweep?

Hi, I'm 39+2 and my next midwife appt is at 40+2. If I make it to the next appt, how soon will I be offered a sweep? Is there any chance the midwife would do it at the appt on 40+2 or does it need to be booked for another time? Thanks

It depends on the baby's position and the cervix I think. I went to my appointment at similar time and the baby's head wasn't engaged / cervix not suitable so left v disappointed I'm afraid.

I had a sweep on my due date, so they should do it at your appointment if they can. My cervix was unfavourable though so like pp I too left disappointed! Good luck Smile

Princess - did you know beforehand that you would have a sweep on that day or was it only suggested at the appt?

My midwife was all set to do one at 40 weeks but couldn't as not engaged or favourable. Baby showed up 3 days later anyway.
I'm sure your midwife will try if you ask.

If it's your first baby then it is unlikely your cervix will be favourable.

For second pregnancies, the cervix is already open following the birth of the first baby, so a midwife can successfully reach past the cervix. It's very unlikely with a first pregnancy so I would try to pin your hopes on it.

I know it's a cliche, but baby will come when it's ready and there is no rush. I speak from experience as my first was 10 days late and second 2 weeks late.

Leave baby to make it's own way in its own time...in a few weeks your baby will be in yours arms and the rush to get baby out will be a distant memory.

They don't do them here until you are about 7 days overdue

I had mine at 40+2 and my three DC were all born the next day. I was already 1cm dilated when they did the sweep.

With DD (1st baby) I had regular growth scans and at the 38 week one the consultant gave me a sweep - I was already 2cm dilated and then booked me in for an induction 2 days later at 36+4, was induced at 36+6 (no beds on labour ward) and DD was born after 6 hours

ALS17081982 Yes they had said they would try a sweep at that appointment if I wanted them to.
