Have you tried the Gaviscon liquid? I found the tablets useless but a good swig of the liquid worked wonders! You can have it on prescription and thankfully they do a peppermint one. I got through gallons of the stuff last time. I used o have it when I went to bed even if I didn’t have heart burn as it stopped me waking up in the night with it. It was horrid so I hope you find something that works.

Also, sounds obvs but have you thought about what you’re eating and when you’re eating? Perhaps try smaller meals. Easier said than done I know. Google lists of things that make it worse, and try avoiding things to see what helps, for me cheese was a killer - and that made me very sad! 😖😉

Also agree with PP about liquid gaviscon, much better than tablets.

Also about the omeprazole... Go for it! I had awful hyperemesis, have seen consultant every 4 weeks through pregnancy, they always say to take omeprazole. It's very safe and there's no point in suffering :-)

Fat, caffeine, spice and large meals are bad for heartburn.

Hope it eases soon :-(

I was prescribed ranitidine and although I hate taking stuff in pregnancy I wouldn't have coped without it.

twistedpink · 28/05/2018 19:14

Ive got peptec from my midwife, basically cheap version of liquid gaviscon lol works alright! Rennies do the job too! Avoid milk because long term it can actually make heartburn worse due to the fat in it! I also try and drink a lot of water. I have had the worst heartburn. 37 weeks now and it's calmed down!

Chocness · 28/05/2018 20:36

Rennies and fizzy water help me. The combination of the two does create some unpleasant burps however does relieve the burning pretty quickly.

Smellyjo · 28/05/2018 21:00

Oh it's grim innit. I agree liquid gaviscon, and I also find chewing gum a temporary relief, something to do with the excess saliva produced. I find that it gets worse if I let myself get too hungry, it's better if eat little and often. Some foods seem to set it off but not consistently...hope you don't have to survive it too long.

Liquid gaviscon makes me heave 😷 i have tried different foods, cutting foods out, even water gives me heartburn now its just uncontrollable haha! Thanks everyone!

Absolutely ranitidine. I know it's tablets but it's the only thing that helped! Took it away when I was pregnant with DD, and I survived as long as I could this pregnancy before caving and going to the GP. I was waking up unable to breathe! It's mostly gone, now.

I also use chewable Rennies, and the Sainsburys own chewable ones. Also, Love Hearts!

I tried everything to stop my heartburn & avid reflux for 28 weeks but nothing worked. I was sick every day and the heartburn was horrendous. I didn't want to take tablets either but eventually took Omeperazol and it worked almost instantly. The doctor assured me they are safe in pregnancy & it was worse for me and the baby me constantly being sick than taking the tabets. I wouldn't think twice to get them earlier if I were to get pregnant again, there is no point in suffering. Hope you find something that works for you Smile

Smellyjo · 28/05/2018 21:15

Someone also told me you can take bicarbonate of soda - maybe google that to check, sounds yuk but if desperate!

ruthieruthuk · 28/05/2018 23:14

Gaviscon extra, got it on prescription from my doctor and use to drink it like pop until I went on tablets which helped!

Ebeneser · 28/05/2018 23:18

I was going to suggest Gaviscon, but OP says it makes her heave! I have the Aniseed flavour Gavison and that seems to do the trick for me.
Prior to this I used the Tesco own indigestion tablets and they were OK

I don’t have any tips I’m afraid but watching as I woke up early this morning with awful heartburn/acid reflux. It’s the first time I’ve experienced it during my pregnancy, I’m 16 weeks tomorrow. Thought it started much later during pregnancy to be honest! Hoping it’s just a one off but knowing my luck probably not!!

Bluebirdsky · 29/05/2018 09:30

Don't drink milk, it only offers a very temporary relief and then actually makes it worse by causing your body to produce more acid.

twistedpink · 29/05/2018 09:58

Have you tried rennies? The spearmint ones are better than normal ones! Bloody pregnancy lol heartburn is up there with the worst of it! Liquid gaviscon makes me heave... that thick liquid in my mouth..... arghhhhh
