Anyone else's newborn do this?

10 day old baby. Sometimes, after a feed, he'll go completely limp and be semi-unresponsive. His body will feel weightless, his breathing will get louder and quite raspy, his heart rate will increase/become erratic and irregular, his eyes will be semi-open and move around quite quickly (sometimes rolling, it seems), he'll be a little jerky and he'll be very hard to wake up - if not impossible. In such a state, he seems to be responsive to touch and sound, but he's definitely not 'there' (eyes won't be fully open and won't focus on you, body will be floppy etc). Wise to mention that this only happens during sleep - never when he's awake. It seems that it's caused by feeding, when he becomes 'milk drunk'. I'm currently in the Children’s ward in Homerton Hospital (London) and they're doing various tests on him. I'm worried it's seizures, although everything's come back normal.

Anyone had experience do this/know what might be going on?

Thanks in advance!

I'm glad he's being looked at. From experience and what you are saying it does sound like seizures - which can be very well managed if it is. Please try not to worry to much Thanks

This is a very old thread but I wondered on the off chance, what was the outcome? My newborn does the same thing!

Obviously don't know the outcome, but I would definitely recommend getting your little one checked. The best thing to do is take a video of what happens so the doctor can see it directly. Best wishes

Thanks Nejnej.
I’ve taken a video and will show my GP next week. I’m pretty sure it’s just REM sleep as my son is fairly easy to wake up and I’m quite paranoid but best to check as you say.

Just in case anyone reads this and is interested, we ended up in a&e for an unrelated reason and showed the video to the doc, they said it was nothing to worry about. I would always recommend, as poster above, seeking professional medical advice if you’re worried about your baby.
