small boobs and breastfeeding

hello
anyone out there whose boobs resolutely refused to blossom in pregnancy still manage to breastfeed?
I'm told the size of your boobs "doesn't make any difference" but i'm not convinced!
mine have gone up from being 36A to, er, not much more than a 38 A or small B -and they don't look much different. The only big change is nipples are enormous.
I'm 31+5 and just can't imagine them holding much milk. Can I hope for a late growth spurt, or is this as good as it's going to get?!

Thinking of my friends, the ones with probs were the ones with big boobs, small boobs seem to be perfect for the job. IF you need help when the time comes, track down a bf counsellor, they are fab fab fab. Good luck!

ScaryHairy · 18/05/2007 21:51

It honestly will not matter.

There was a so-so documentary on a few weeks ago about women who were inseure about being flat chested. One of them had sucessfully breastfed 2 children and afterwards her breasts had gone back to her normal size. My mother was also resolutely an A cup and breastfed two of us.

As an aside, just wait until you see the size of them the day after your milk comes in. You won't believe your eyes!

I bf both of mine to 12 months with small boobs. Started out s 34a and by end of pregnancy 36b. I was really cross not to have bigger ones. Both babies thrived and put on lots of weight quickly so don't worry and good luck

berolina · 18/05/2007 21:53

Breast size very little to do with bf success IME.

My norks are so small I never bother with a bra. We celebrated ds's 2nd birthday today, and this evening I put him to bed after his usual breastfeed

I had problems for the first few weeks, but not related to nork size.

Good luck

I have small boobs, normally aa, think I'm about an a now
small boobs are great for feeding as y ou don't have to hold them up, and they can see their target v easily!!
don't worry

berolina · 18/05/2007 21:54

oh, and mine didn't increased in size much at all during pg and after milk came in...

wrinklytum · 18/05/2007 21:55

Hi hon, please do not worry,I have small boobs and have sucessfully breastfed 2 babies!!!

Your boobs will probably get a bit bigger near the end of pregnancy, but a few days after birth when your milk comes in is when they reach their fullest IMO.I think that they do not sugget getting a breastfeeding bra until you are 38 weeks ish if I remember right.

I went from 36a to 38c and couldn't believe I had such breasts!!!DP was gutted as only the baby got a look in HTH

HelloMama · 18/05/2007 21:56

I used to be barely an A-cup and went up to nearly an F cup when I was breast feeding - so watch out! I had no problems at all. Disappointed to go back to a small B-cup again after though! Am now preg with no 2 and am already a DD....

Mini-egg, I'm a 36A, currently 30+6 weeks pg with my fourth, and certainly last time around I had LOADS of milk, gallons of the stuff!!

Don't forget, milk comes from milk ducts in your chest, not in your breast tissue - so size of breast has no impact on the amount of milk you produce.

Once my milk comes in I go up to about a B cup (oh, the joys!! CLEAVAGE!!! ) but go back down to an A cup once I stop.

Good luck and go for it, and don't worry - size is definitely not everything

bananabump · 18/05/2007 22:02

They say breast size is all about the amount of fat under the skin and has no bearing on the number or function of the milk glands beneath so having small breasts doesn't mean you'll have a problem breastfeeding.

I'm more worried about having bf problems because my boobs are pretty saggy thanks to weight fluctuations and not wearing a bra when I'm in the house (Life's too short to wear a harness 24/7!)

But then you see those tribeswomen on the national geographic with babies hanging from their hip-skimming boobs and they don't seem to have any problems, so we'll see!

DontlookatmeImanervouswreck · 18/05/2007 22:02

I found mine didn't get any bigger until after ds was born.He was born at 37 weeks though so they may have got bigger before he was due if given the chance. So you probably will have a late growth spurt

Anyway they were a measily AA/A size, and went up to a B/C(dependingonwhether ds has just fed or not. Ds is now 19months and we are still going.

Your boob size won't stop you breastfeeding.

miniegg · 18/05/2007 22:22

thanks everyone! i'm really reassured! xx

Yes I was a B cup throughout pg no 1 and when my milk came in went up to an EE cup !

lou031205 · 19/05/2007 13:07

I was a 32A, didn't change more than one size each way (went up to 34B) in pregnancy, but when my milk came in went up to 34D/DD - masses of milk, breastfed for 7 months before work got in the way & chose to give up.

Homebird8 · 19/05/2007 13:41

Before pregnancy I was a 32 AAA (yes, 3 of the little A's) then whilst I was breastfeeding I reached the dizzy heights of 34A. Am now a 32 AA after feeding both of mine perfectly happily for 18 months. Size really doesn't matter. Letting them feed when they want to, does. That's what stimulates milk production and you produce it whilst they're feeding as well as in between feeds. You'll perhaps feel the production start a couple of minutes after the LO starts to feed. This is called 'let down'.

3andnomore · 19/05/2007 13:58

LOl...I am definitely on the flat chested side, and even though my boobs may have grown a little bit in pg, the real groth occured after giving Birth and milk coming in!
With es I went from not needing a Bra pre-pregnancy, because simply they were that small...afer giving Birth to my son I could have easily given Dolly Parton or Jordan a run for their money.....and I ain't joking...had lots and lots and lots more milk.
Norks size really doesn't mean anything
