Eating during pregnancy

I really want to give my baby the best start in life and eat all the right foods so it will be super healthy when i give birth (and then i intend to breast feed for as long as i can) but i just cant face eating 'good' food, i manage a few bananas an some fruit juice but i just cant face proper meals. when i do get one i will just poke it and prod it and just feel ill, have been getting real cravings for popcorn and i know im not supposed to eat 'empty calories' but even when i force myself to eat a meal im full after just a small amount. i feel sick from the time i eat in the morning (so i put if off as long as possible) till the time i go to bed. does anyone have any advice for me please.

How many weeks are you mother2b??

Personally speaking, i had every good intention of keeping it healthy too but when it came to the crunch, the only things i could face was "empty calories" (as such). If it means that you will at least eat something substantial, just eat what you can face. Dont worry about it too much. When your sickness passes, you can concentrate on a better eating plan.

I was never physically sick, but felt nauseaus (sp?) alot of the time, especially when i thought about what to eat. Anything that didn't make me feel sick was going straight in my gob!!!

Try several small meals and snacks in a day, rather than three big ones.

If you want some popcorn, have some. Just don't eat the entire bucket in one go! Don't worry about "empty calories", eat what you feel you can at the moment. It's better than not eating at all.

Remember that your body will take whatever it needs for the baby first, so you aren't risking the baby's health by not eating properly.

Beans are a great source of protein and fibre, wholemeal bread the same, so beans on toast, perhaps with some cheese or an egg, is a perfectly healthy meal which doesn't feel too healthy, iyswim! Same goes for jacket potatoes with cheese, beans, tuna or chilli on top, all good for you. If you can't bear vegetables, you can hide chopped up veg in curries, soups, pasta sauces etc.

Fruitwise, keep up with the bananas and fruit juice, they're a good start. Then when you go to the supermarket have a look round at what looks delicious and fresh, and just buy whatever you fancy even if it's a single kiwi fruit. Also remember tinned fruit is good, as well as ready made fruit smoothies. They all contribute to your 5 a day.

What I try to do is add chopped banana to my cereal, have salad with my sandwich at lunch, perhaps some steamed veg/peas or beans with my dinner, and have a snack of some fruit and a glass or two of fruit juice in the day, and suddenly you've done your 5 a day without forcefeeding yourself oranges.

Don't worry about having some popcorn, a bit of what you fancy won't do you any harm, just try to balance out the bad stuff with some good stuff every day, and keep up your calcium with some milk/cheese/yoghurt/milkshakes. Whatever you can stomach.

Rich Teas are lush. I've got a thing about them at the moment!!

MrsSpoon · 18/05/2007 14:47

Yes, it is a very good idea to eat during pregnancy.

its actually though thought of a meal, im ok with stuff that i can just grab and eat. i used to have a jacket potato everyday at work on my lunch, smothered in cheese put had to 'give it up' because it was just making me heave from the moment i put the last forkful in my mouth. also i just cant stand the smell of milk, it always seems to smell off, i know its prob just me, so im warm it up and stick lots of chocolate in it

Hot chocolate, eh? Sounds like a plan!!

I know what you mean about your normal foods making your feel ill. I was terrible for that at first. Thankfully tho it does go away and now i'm (almost) back to normal!

Buy some Pregnacare or similar pre-natal vitamin suplement to ensure you are getting all the nutrients you need despite the difficulty eating. You need the Folic Acid they contain anyway!

bananabump · 18/05/2007 15:30

mother2b I know what you mean about milk, I'm funny with it too, it always smells a bit off or "sweet" to me even when it's a brand new bottle I've just brought home.

Cravendale is much better, it's purer and has virtually no smell. You'd think a different brand of milk would make no difference but it really has. Drink it ice cold, or warm some up with honey and cinnamon before bed. Yummy!

I also drink quite a few milkshakes, a bottle of that cheapy "break time" banana milkshake has about 75% of your RDA of calcium, so that and a bowl of cereal/yoghurt and you're ok calcium wise.

I went off a lot of foods midway through pg, but it seems better now. Just eat little and often.

mother2b · 18/05/2007 15:50

Am taking folic acid (which i was told would be prescribed for me but had to pay a whole 4.99 for from holland and barretts) but not sure which suppliments/vitamins are best to take, have been meaning to go to doctors but my work is funny about me having time off (im only temping through agency)

Don't worry too much about what you're eating and not eating at the moment. I remember feeling horrendous at the start of this pg (am now 26 weeks) and I couldn't face much other than bland food - baked potato with cheese and beans seemed to become my staple diet!! As long as you are keeping fluids down and maybe take a pregnancy vitamin supplement too, that should be fine.

After about 14 weeks I started to feel much better and was able to eat very healthily again... with the odd slip up here and there!!

BTW - popcorn is actually quite good for you - especially if you make it yourself and don't put too much sugar or salt on it!!

I'm sure you'll start to feel much better soon
