Labour snacks is a thing? I'm so hungry all the time at the moment this makes me happy

AndWhat · 23/05/2018 12:34

I found a bag of jelly babies really useful to give a little sugar boost at times. Other than that a sandwich, crisps etc in early labour.

Emmafh3 · 23/05/2018 12:40

I'm probably one of the weird ones who had an insane urge to bake cookies and cakes in my last month of being pregnant. And I put it off until the day before I went into labour and bakes some soft gingerbread biscuit cookie things.
And omg, saved my life. Love them as it is, but after labour the ward had no food, the canteens where closed (3am) and we had no money on us. Except these gingerbread.... Ate the whole batch and made him bring me more from home.

Find something sugary but savoury and nothing that will dry your mouth even more than labour does.

I'd say also have a good variety of drinks and don't have anything too strongly flavoured that will be horrible to chuck up! I made a mistake of packing bananas - not pleasant chucking up. But the sweets and nuts where good snacks and weren't terrible in flavouring my sick (So sorry if this is TMI). But the drinks were the god send in getting rid of the sicky taste in my mouth. It is really common to chuck up when in labour btw so don't be surprised if you do!

Also be prepared to be told you cant have any of your snacks. Mine got taken away from me in the end Sad but then there was a risk I was gonna be rushed off for a C-sec and be put under (epidural didn't really work on me...)

Last time I took cereal bars and yoghurt covered raisins. This time I've got dates and cereal bars. I also remember drinking a billion little cartons of apple juice with a straw, but the midwife supplied these (not in the UK!)

@FASH84 100% you gotta keep the energy levels up!! And as others have said you could give birth at a bad time and there be no food!!
Ive cereal bars and sports drinks i think i will get plenty and keep them in the car dh can bring some more in if needs be!! Ohh sweets must get a bag of jelly babies i think id cry if i wasn't allowed to eat!!

lmx0 I did cry when they took my sweets away... I had hidden sweets next to me and then they took those too - cue me throwing a full tantrum (in my defence I'd been labouring for nearly 2 days at that point with 0 sleep)

gryffen · 23/05/2018 13:43

We aren't allowed to eat when in labour so our hospital provides Lucozade sport When taken down to delivery room. (Consultant led).

Even MLU after certain stage aren't allowed food incase of issues.

freckleface12 · 23/05/2018 13:48

Grapes/little fruit like blueberries or pineapple chunks are great between contractions!

mumofmunchkin · 23/05/2018 14:01

Stuff that you can pack in your hospital bag weeks before and forget about, so not fresh food which you'd have to make sure you always have on hand and ready to go. Cereal bars, jelly babies, chocolate, lucozade/sports drinks, water etc.

TheyCanGoInTheBucket · 23/05/2018 14:29

I ate a massive home made fish pie during labour (homebirth), washed it down with a litre of lucozade and then cried when I threw it all up and couldn't understand why my vomit was bright orange Hmm

This time, I've got lucozade and cereal bars in my emergency hospital bag. Just need to remind myself that lucozade comes back up the same colour it went in...

Buxbaum · 23/05/2018 14:37

Frozen cartons of Ribena or your juice of choice.

Labour wards are BAKING hot so the drink will stay cold, and the straw means you can drink in any position. Take some extra bendy straws, too.

lmx0 · 23/05/2018 14:58

@TwittleBee 😂 hopefully this time you can eat!!
@TheyCanGoInTheBucket 😂 that made me giggle!! Yoou were doing well to eat a good meal like that even tho it didnt stay!!

Thanks for all your ideas!! They are fab altho i think id forget all about the frozen juice and be left with none!! Wonder would the hospital mind if i come with a coolbox or mini fridge? 🤔😂

Frozen lucozade sport was the best thing ever! They would thaw relatively quickly but still be refreshingly cold when I needed. It’s warm in labour wards and labour is hard work! I think I brought 3 of them, which was more than enough for my 7-8 hours in labour at the hospital and immediately after.

Food wise I think I just had cereal bars and my partner would periodically give me small pieces. The lucozade probably would have been enough on its own though.

vgiraffe · 23/05/2018 18:52

I second grapes. I completely lost my appetite and laboured mostly on grapes and Lucozade sport!

I didn't feel hungry at all but had a few Dextrose Energy sweets to suck for energy. Make sure you have something nice to drink, preferably with a straw.

lmx0 · 23/05/2018 23:16

Thanks for your suggestions ladies 😀
