First world problem alert...

I need to know roughly when I'll be able to schedule my last sports massage for!

I’m 16 weeks and it’s starting to get uncomfortable now. But this isn’t my first baby so my bump is bigger than it was last time at this stage! Last time I went to Mallorca at 18 weeks and was happily sunbathing laid on my front!

Can they even do sports massage during pregnancy?

AnotherOriginalUsername · 20/05/2018 20:15

@PenguinChristmas I don't see why not? I usually have my back, shoulders and legs done

Oops pressed send.

I usually have them monthly but it's just my upper back/shoulders I'd like doing. Will ask my (currently injured and not working) masseur what he thinks.

At about 2 weeks because my boobs hurt so much. By the time they stopped hurting my bump felt too weird to lie on. Grin

At about 18 weeks.

Massage isn’t recommended in the first trimester. However I’ve found that my therapist can still give me a really good sports massage lying on my side. So if you’ve got a good therapist you could always discuss with them?

I tried a pregnancy massage, but it was far too gentle and fluffy. I get terrible back pain and only my sports massages really touch it.

AnotherOriginalUsername · 20/05/2018 20:25

Do you know the reason why @isthismummy?

My guy is great, I'm with you on gentle fluffy massages. I stagger in, I have his entire bodyweight going through his elbow all over for an hour and the skip out feeling like I can conquer the world!

There is thought to be a higher risk of miscarriage associated with massage in the first trimester.
I doubt you sports therapist will risk it his insurance won't cover work on pregnant women unless they have particular pregnancy related qualifications

youokayhun · 20/05/2018 20:36

I'm 28 weeks and still able to lay on my front to a degree!

PenguinChristmas · 20/05/2018 21:08

From my experience lots of places refuse to do massage on pregnant women especially in first trimester due to risk of miscarriage so their insurance doesn’t cover it. You have to have special pregnancy massages which whilst nice aren’t prob what your looking for if you like a good sports massage

stealthbanana · 20/05/2018 22:05

My sports massage therapist agreed to massage me through my first tri - I would have died without it (am hypermobile).

At about 20 weeks I turned over to my side and she did it that way until birth.

Mousefunky · 20/05/2018 23:52

I’m 16 weeks and definitely can’t lie on my front. I also can’t lie on my back, it makes me feel woozy so I’m stuck with my sides already. It is my fourth Dc though so am showing a lot quicker:

didsomeonesaybunny · 20/05/2018 23:55

Around 16 weeks I think. I was paranoid to do it from this stage onwards. Be careful with massage, I had one (not even laying on my front) and fainted straight after. Massage can lower your blood pressure as does pregnancy.

isthismummy · 21/05/2018 00:11

I believe it’s because there’s a belief that it puts you at higher risk of miscarriage in first trimester.

My therapist isn’t actually pregnancy trained, but I’ve agreed to the massages at my own risk. Personally I think there is far too much hysterical bollocks around what pregnant woman shouldn’t do. As long as I’m not getting my bump deep tissue massaged I’m good to go.

I love a real, get into every muscle massage too. The pregnancy massage I went for left me with more aches than when I went in. Just far too soft and light!

m4rdybum · 21/05/2018 07:43

Isn't the risk more to do with the oils they use, rather than the massage itself?

We went on my hen do when my sister was about 10 weeks an she was able to have a massage but with no essential oils.

cryptonaut · 21/05/2018 18:15

My massage therapist doesn't have any pregnancy training so she isn't covered by insurance. She also told me that I can't have a massage in the first trimester. She recommended someone she used during both her pregnancies but this therapist can't do anything in the first trimester either. My back has been quite sore and I really miss the deep tissue massages I had weekly to tackle both my physical and mental issues. However my chiropractor is happy to continue treatment as he is covered throughout pregnancy.
