Did you give up caffeine

I'm so tired in first tri I can't manage to stop the caffeine. I have one teaspoon of coffee in the morning, sometimes another drink like coke or tea later. How much caffeine do you drink?

Mostly, but not entirely. Chocolate contains caffeine!

I had decaf tea and coffee only until about 20 weeks and caffeine free diet Coke if I fancied a fizzy drink. Now I'm 24 weeks I'll have a normal coffee if I fancy it (or if I've been up in the night and I'm knackered).

I've just cut right down. I don't drink alcohol at all or smoke so the odd coffee or Coke here and there isn't going to harm.

First trimester I'd avoid if you can.

I just had one cup per day. It was hard as I usually drink 5/6 cups per day. That was the hardest thing to give up. First trimester I didn't drink any though, as it made me feel sick.

I got decaf for drinks at home but still had the occasional caffeine drink at a friends or fizzy drink.
DD2 was born at 28 weeks, and after trying to avoid it in her pregnancy they ironically put her on caffeine twice daily to help regulate her heart rate drops. I would presume its not ideal but not too harmful or they wouldn't be giving it to a third trimester aged baby.

I had one in the morning, one in afternoon. I was down from about six though.

BiddyPop · 23/05/2018 14:51

I used to still allow myself 1 proper cup of coffee a day, and if I wanted another generally took decaf (near decent coffee shops so it was still a good latte even if decaf).

I also allowed myself 1 glass (small) of wine a week. With the blessing of the Obs.

His reasoning was that a "happy mummy makes a happy baby" (i.e. less stressed mum is better for the baby compared to the amount of potential harm caused by small amounts of caffeine/alcohol - but he did advise to keep amounts low on both).

I had one cup of filter coffee a day and that was it - but that's what I've always done.

Reduced (2 espressos a day down to 1) but only because it was affecting my sleep. Midwife said I could actually carry on consuming the same amount of caffeine if I wanted to :p

butidontwannausemyhead · 23/05/2018 18:20

In the first trimester yeah but only because my body wouldn't let me drink it. I drink 7 cups of tea a day on average and after 1st tri I continued to do so for all 3 children.

TurquoiseDress · 23/05/2018 20:12

No I didn't give up in any of my pregnancies.

Am into 3rd trimester now, tend to have about 3 cups of tea during the day. Will have coffee at the weekend/when I've got more time to do a 'proper' coffee as opposed to instant one.

I guess it's down to individual preference and doing it all in moderation.

No, I’ve not given caffeine up, but I do try and reduce my intake. I have switched to decaff tea (I can drink tea like it’s going out of fashion) and very rarely drink fizzy drinks anyway. At work I’ll have the odd cappuccino or normal white tea from the klix machine in the mornings and that’s usually my lot. I’ve never been a big chocolate eater either, but will still eat a bit now and then.

whiteonesugar · 24/05/2018 08:59

I just reduced it. I am a big coffee drinker so I would have one in the morning and then switch to decaf. I would have one tea as well then switch. I was quite paranoid about it after having 3 miscarriages, so I didnt want to chance it.

I think they say no more than 200mg and a filter coffee is about 140mg or something?

PieAndPumpkins · 24/05/2018 11:18

I've been fairly cautious, generally just one cup of tea a day plus a bit of chocolate if I feel like it. Although during the first trimester particularly, I totally went off chocolate anyway. I never actually calculated precisely, just tried to reduce my intake. The fear and risk of miscarriage overrode my desire for tons of caffeine.

GlamBump · 24/05/2018 14:54

no chance, my job is too busy and stressful to not have a cup at the start of the day. So, apart from weekends, I still have 1 cup like before, and i have 1-2 cans of diet drink a day also. Been for 2 scans so far and nothing wrong with baby whatsoever :)

Magpie24 · 24/05/2018 15:23

I've given it up because the thought of it makes me nauseous but I've had the odd coffee and Diet Coke.

Magpiefeather · 24/05/2018 15:33

I just had 1 or 2 cups of tea a day (as per NHS guidelines). Was going to switch to decaf but a friend told me horror stories about how they decaffeinate tea, so I decided not to. However, just had a quick google and it seems some tea manufacturers use co2 to decaffeinate the tea rather than the chemical solvent. Should have googled that when I was pregnant rather than taking my friend’s word for it! But I would say if the chemicals etc worry you I would look up which brands don’t use solvents to decaffeinate tea/coffee.
