How do I curb my huge appetite?

Always had a pretty normal appetite. Never over eaten and always been a size 8-10. Now I'm pregnant, I could easily eat 3000 calories a day. I'm trying to eat filling and healthy foods, lots of small meals as opposed to 3 large ones, drinking plenty of water. I go to bed hungry. Wake up in the night hungry. ALWAYS HUNGRY!! How do I cope with this constant hunger and not gain too much weight?

Drink a glass of water before eating. Eat very very slowly. The slimmest people I know take ages to eat their meal.

PeachMelba78 · 18/05/2018 18:21

I am the same, but hopefully it will curb. So different from the last time!

MyNameIsTotoro · 18/05/2018 20:29

I didn't manage to curb it and now I'm 4 st heavier at 40wks Blush

It slowed down a lot in the 3rd trimester but the first two were hard.

I did the same last time, thankfully I breastfed it off so hopefully will do so again

halfwitpicker · 18/05/2018 20:30

You don't.

You gain four stone like the rest of us.

GummyGoddess · 18/05/2018 20:46

What do you want to eat? Or is that everything?

The only thing that has curbed my appetite is the baby has now crushed my internal organs and my stomach is now all squashed and has no capacity left. Much like my lungs.

randomsabreuse · 18/05/2018 20:49

I have occasional must eat everything in sight urges (1st Trimester).. lack of space/bloating is reducing their impact on my consumption...

ShackUp · 18/05/2018 22:42

Later in your pregnancy you'll get heartburn and won't fancy eating at all in my experience

Bethacus · 19/05/2018 08:43

I was exactly the same throughout my first trimester, permanently ravenous and worried I was going to pile on more weight than was healthy. But despite eating for a hungry family of five two I’ve only put on the recommended amount of weight at 25 weeks. I figure my body knew that it needed all that extra energy for building a person and just went with it. It eased off around 12 weeks and I’m back to normal appetites now.

CaraDeanna · 19/05/2018 08:50

@halfwitpicker definitely won't be gaining four stone - I'll not allow myself to as that's not healthy at all. Even the most underweight women are recommended to lose 3 stone maximum.

@GummyGoddess pretty much my normal diet but more of it! I have no specific cravings. I'm just hungry all the time!

@Bethacus ah great that it eased off for you! I'm 16 weeks now so fingers crossed mine eases off soon too. I'm trying to fill myself up with water before meals but seem to be hungry all the time. Can think of worse issues to have I guess!

Listen to your body - it's not healthy to obsess about calorie counting when you're growing a human being inside you.

If it's healthy stuff, just keep eating it!

I’ve had the same problem over the last couple of weeks now that my nausea has eased! My fitbit app has a food tracker where you can enter what you eat each day and it works out the calories. I’ve been using that to make sure my intake roughly matches the calories I’m burning and I’m not massively overeating.

Dobbythesockelf · 19/05/2018 12:26

I was like this in the 2nd trimester but now I'm 34 weeks I don't have the space so it might even out in the end

BlueBug45 · 19/05/2018 12:55

I stuffed myself in the first trimester then after about 16 weeks I wasn't hungry.

gryffen · 19/05/2018 13:20

Try protien rich food and slow release snacks.

Lost 65kg before falling pregnant and now with gastric sleeve I'm following preop diet and been advised it's totally fine to put on about 15kg - that's from a bariatric surgeon, nutritionist and consultant.

Just eat, no matter what size you are big small thin curvy etc Your body is telling you something.

Have fun.

GummyGoddess · 19/05/2018 13:25

If it's nothing in particular then you'll just need to wait it out. Nothing I ate stopped me being hungry, I'm not hungry now because of the crushed internal organs.

I did find that the stronger your stomach muscles beforehand, the faster your stomach and lung capacity shrink because baby goes up instead of out.

halfwitpicker · 19/05/2018 16:34

I know how you feel op. I said the same. With DS I ate what I liked, I was starved all the time, waking up hungry and having cheese sandwiches, bowls of cereal etc. Gained 3.5 stone.

With DD I said to myself I was gonna be more sensible. So ate more protein, veg soups, fruit, yog instead when I was hungry.

Still gained 3.5 stone Confused

I think if you're gonna gain, you'll gain.

halfwitpicker · 19/05/2018 16:36

As pp's said the first and second trimester is the worst. By the third you'll be over it.

FWIW I lost all the weight both times within a year.

RoxytheRexy · 19/05/2018 18:48

I’m the same. A size 8-10 naturally, never really dieted. Just ate when hungry etc but now I’m starving all the time. Waking in the night thinking about biscuits.

I’m only 9 weeks so hopefully it will pass. I remember it did end with my first

GummyGoddess · 19/05/2018 19:11

@RoxytheRexy

Waking in the night thinking about biscuits.

Sounds about right! Grin It will taper off eventually.

QueenAravisOfArchenland · 20/05/2018 10:26

I am constantly hungry in the first trimester and put on half a stone to a stone straight away. I'm pretty sure it's just what my body needs to metabolically support breastfeeding - after the birth both times that weight just stuck stubbornly until baby was on solids and then fell off at the same time as my period returned.
