Confusion with toxoplasmosis test

Hi all
I have a quick question I hope someone can help with.
I had a test on Monday for toxoplasmosis due to a possible recent exposure.
Results have come back and when the reception gave me the results she said they checked for IGg and IGm antibodies - firstly I thought they checked for IGc and IGm antibodies.
The dr had put a note on their to say past exposure therefore immune.
However it says to follow up with another blood test just to be sure.
I’m a little confused now as I thought you could only catch it once ? And also is checking for IGg correct?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi can I ask what your recent exposure was? Worried when I might’ve ate some pink-ish meat

Hi @Carlymarie89
I grid some gardening without gloves and cane across some cat faeces but also ate some Parma ham the same day which is uncooked meat 🤦🏼‍♀️ If you are worried then ask your GP for a test. I asked my midwife and it was not a normal test they would do xx

This site gives a fairly good overview of the two antibodies and why they might do a follow up test just to be sure: labtestsonline.org/tests/toxoplasmosis-testing

If you have past immunity then I believe you cannot pass it onto your baby, even if you’ve had a second exposure.

That is supposed to be correct though I have my doubts as I was flagged up not immune and exposed to toxoplasmosis during pregnancy despite living with cats all my life.

@ferrier - what happened in your case?

I was told that though I has been exposed in a slightly less critical period (before 3 months iirc) , if I had 'caught' it my dc would likely be severely brain damaged and blind. I was given ultrasound every 4 weeks which didn't show any abnormalities but I was still offered a termination every time, even at 36 weeks. In the end he was born perfectly healthy.

If you've been shown as past exposure you should be absolutely fine is the advice I was given. In my case I just didn't believe that I'd not had a past exposure.

I had read the risks associated with contracting the illness at such a crucial time but can’t believe they would offer a termination - especially that darninto the pregnancy. I thought the limit was 24 weeks?! I did read the same from someone else as well - and their baby was born healthy. And someone who had an amino to check whether it had spread to the baby - the lady suffered a miscarriage after and sadly the baby was perfectly healthy, so sad.
I’m so glad your LO was born healthy.
I will follow the dr advice, more for my piece of mind xx

Hi, I think the follow up blood test will be to check your antibody levels aren't rising which would indicate a recent infection. I think the Dr is trying to be thorough and ensure it is a positive due to past (rather than recent) exposure. In a new infection the antibody level will change between tests.
Really hope all is fine with your results. You could call and request a call from the Dr to discuss further?
