Movements question

Does 'normal movement' imply daily movements or can it be normal for a few v active days followed by a quieter one?

Usually this baby is v active but I do find she'll have a quieter day here and there. Yesterday was one of those. There was movement but not as much as other days. So I don't know whether to be concerned or not!

Am 32+5

That can be normal, or it can be baby not moving as much because they’re not well. I have a baby that is really unpredictable and sometimes goes quiet for a day. I’ve been in to get checked out 8 times or so and it’s always been fine but they’ve never minded and always said to come back if baby is ever quiet.

It is inconvenient but safest thing is to go and get checked just in case

Thanks for the quick response.

I know you're right! Have just had breakfast, taking DS to school and if she hasn't picked up I'll go in.

Hi, did you end up going in? :) Movement is such a hard one because I found the general advice is always to check out 'reduced' movement, but then the doctors would leave it up to me, saying to go by what's normal for YOUR baby - which may include the odd quiet day! DS was very active but probably had one 'quiet' day a week which with hindsight WAS his pattern. I always worried on those days and was so happy when he perked up again!
The day he was born, he had virtually NO movement, not even with prompting, all night. It was different to his normal quiet days somehow. I wasn't happy with it and when the docs checked they found his heart rate erratic and delivered him that day (full term and very healthy). Turns out his chord was tight around his neck! So on that occasion it was a sign that things weren't quite right. If I had another baby and had a feeling their movements were off, I'd just get checked. In my 2 pregnancies I got checked 5 times, and 4/5 it was nothing and the last time it wasn't. Each time, the doctors always, always said it was the right call to go in.Smile

I haven't because she picked up again. Although now you're making me doubt myself! I've definitely noticed that this is her pattern, so haven't felt overly worried. Can't help but question it though!

It's hard because whilst she's usually active, the days are quieter and it's the evenings she batters me the most! I also have an anterior placenta.

I'm going to pay close attention today. I live 5mins from the hospital fortunately!

May I ask (I’m only 15 weeks) when it comes to further down the line and you talk about going in, where is that? Is it a&e or do you get more in contact with a maternity unit as you progress? I’m sorry to jump in I’ve just often wondered when I see people talk about it.

My baby is exactly the same, I used to worry a lot and called triage a few times but now I know its just how she is and it is fairly predictable now.

She is a very active baby, and around 5 days a week feels like she is trying to break out, but once a week she has around 2 quiet days. sometimes she can have 7 or so very active days and then a couple quiet days, but her couple of quiet days are quite normal for her.

My midwife, and triage, have both told me that kick counting isn't something they do anymore, and that you are best to go by your babies normal pattern. This is very normal for my baby, so as long as she is moving I tend not to worry about it.
I am 31 + 3 btw.

@millypad In your maternity notes you should have a selection of phone numbers to call if you have any concerns depending on how far along you are. I would call Triage and see where they tell me to go but I would expect the maternity ward or antenatal unit.

I've been sat here with an ice pack on my back and that seems to have woken her up. I feel mean now lol

Whoops @CremeDeSudo didn't mean to make you doubt yourself! With the chord situ with DS he just would not move, at all, all night, and that radio silence did feel very different to any 'quiet' days. So was just giving an example of that scenario. I also had loads of what you're describing, where they seem to lay very low for a while and then perk up a bit! Little pests! Glad she's moving for you now (until the next time!!) 😅
@Millypad in your white notes there should be a bunch of phone numbers, of which one might be an antenatal ward, and they'll see you from about 28 weeks. If it's not clear, just phone your usual midwife and ask for the hospital triage details. After hours you can also phone the labour suite and they'll advise. :)
