What would you consider the age of a ‘young mum’ these days?

im 21 and pregnant, will be 22 when baby is born. I consider myself a young mum as i am still living at my partners parents house. However we should have our own home by this time next year, so im sure i'll feel like more of an 'adult' then lol!

Totally agree with @FASH84, it's houseprice and location dependent... I'm 28 and 30 weeks pregnant. In my area that's very young (even though I feel about 80, I think that's more BECAUSE of the pregnancy than anything else!!).

I was 27 & the youngest in my NCT group. I felt like a young mum as I was the first in my friends to have a baby

K9pal7 · 29/05/2018 11:18

Am 20 my baby is due is September and i turn 21 in the November, where am from most people are around this age that are pregnant/have a child/children. Tbh i would rather be a 'young mum' then be in my 30s but that's just me.

I'm 25 and 25 weeks pregnant FTM and I'm considered an old mum in my nhs trust. Feels a bit strange

Racecardriver · 29/05/2018 11:31

Under 28. I had my first at 19 so deditely a younger mother.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 29/05/2018 11:35

Under 28 I'd consider a young mum. Under 25 very young.

Disclaimer - I had my first at 19, now I'm 32 & expecting number two- seeing things from the other end of the spectrum

I'd have loved to have had both my kids in my mid 20s - but I had to build a career.

Don't worry OP. I had my first at 19, obvs very unplanned and very unprepared! It was a harder road to take but all worked out well, fast forward 12 years I now have three and am luckily financially stable and have a lovely family. Its been very hard work to get where we are but worth every minute.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 29/05/2018 11:38

Massive benefits to having them early if you can I think. Unfortunately often it's not the right man (not saying this is you OP, it was me though and so wasn't in a position to have more for many years, not only a new relationship but also trying to get started at work in mid 20s)

marshmy · 29/05/2018 12:01

i had my first 9 months ago at 19, i'm 20 now. I didn't really think of myself as a young mum and no one mentioned it to me, but i suppose i must be!

Stephisaur · 29/05/2018 14:05

I would say under 25.

I knew a girl at Uni who got pregnant in her second year (unplanned) and she's doing great now. Good luck with your pregnancy OP :) your age doesn't make any difference to what kind of mother you will be :)

Thank you so much everyone for your lovely replies, I’m very touched. I find all of your personal stories to be very encouraging!

I’ll hopefully be telling my mum this weekend, wish me luck haha!
