Ruptured waters at 34 weeks

Hi everyone,
I’d be ever so grateful if anyone could give me any advice on what they think is likely to happen now, or what their experience was in my situation. I’m sure this is going to be very long winded so I appologise in advance!
I am 34+2 today and this is my first pregnancy. My mum had a still birth at a similar gestation, likely due to contracting an infection after experiencing ruptured waters. They monitored her, checked her over, did a speculum etc and couldn’t see anything wrong despite her insisting her waters had gone. She went into labour naturally and unfortunately my sister was born sleeping, despite being fine on monitors right up until that point.
Sunday midday I wiped after going to the toilet and discovered what looked like my mucus plug. I mentioned it to my midwife on Monday morning when I saw her and she confirmed it looked just like my mucus plug, and was slightly concerned it had some blood in it as that usually means it isn’t going to grow back. Monday afternoon I was at the hairdressers and felt a sudden ‘snapping’ sensation in my stomach, almost like an elastic band. I didn’t think much of it until about 10 mins later when I noticed my jeans were damp. I rang my midwife to let her know and she suggested I head to hospital. On the way I leaked more fluid, totally clear, but when I got there they performed a speculum and told me that there wasn’t any fluid there and it must just be discharge! (That had soaked through a pad, knickers and jeans?Hmm )
Shortly after I started getting quite regular Braxton Hicks, and when they hooked me up to the monitor they said they looked like contractions. I was surprised as they weren’t painful, just uncomfortable and very regular.
They performed another speculum and this time confirmed my waters had ruptured. They gave me a steroid injection, took my bloods, started me on antibiotics etc and admitted me to the labour ward.
I had regular Braxton Hicks until about 3am this morning which then fizzled out. This morning I have had lots of Braxton Hicks but they are no longer regular or increasing in frequency. They gave me the second steroid injection this morning and sent me for a growth scan.
The scan confirmed baby is growing as expected (30th percentile) but does have slightly less amniotic fluid than they would like, still within the normal range though. At a previous growth scan my amniotic fluid was at the top end of the normal range.
They have now said I need to stay at least another 24 hours and they will discuss with me tomorrow what they are going to do. I asked if they could give me any more information now and she just said my home birth was very unlikely, as was them letting me go over 37 weeks.
Does anyone have any advice on what is likely to happen now? I had a google and lots of sources suggested as I’m over 34 weeks they would induce me as she is at greater risk of infection than she is of problems resulting from being premature, especially now she has had the steroids.
Given my mums history I’m feeling absolutely terrified. I want her to cook as long as possible obviously, and am I’m no rush to be induced but I’m terrified of her being stillborn if I continue with the pregnancy despite my waters continuing to leak. I have been frantically trying to find similar stories online and the ladies who were induced at 34 weeks seemed to have overwhelmingly more positive stories than those who waited until 37 weeks, despite displaying no signs of infection until the baby was born.
Thank you so much if you managed to get through all that!

One of my dc was a 34 week baby for different reasons to your experience. Given your mum's history and the risk of infection, I would let them induce.
My baby was in Special Care for a while but came home within 2 weeks. No long term health issues.
Good luck Flowers

I don't have any experience of this at 34 weeks, but my waters broke at term and my labour didn't start. I was sent home (went in to check that it was waters) to wait for labour and when it didn't happen after 24 hours I was induced because, I was told, the risk of infection after 24 hours is high.

Obviously my case is very different because I was at term so my baby was fine to be born whenever but they were very keen to get her out.

I suppose at your gestation it's weighing up the risk of infection vs the risk of baby being early. Have you explained your mums history? If you're still in hospital I would be asking for a doctor to sit down with you, explain exactly what is happening, what the risk are are figure out the best course of action for you both to be safe. Dot let them fob you off or sit there worrying - talk to them and ask lots of questions.

Good luck.

Hi, I could read this without responding - my waters also ruptured at 34 weeks exactly (I certainly knew it was waters, it’s was a massive gush in the middle of the night!).

I was admitted into hospital, had the same steroids etc. that you have had & told I would not go past 36 weeks. Later that day I was told beat advice would be to agree to be induced the following morning due to infection risk, however DS had other ideas & I went into natural labour overnight & he was born weighing 5lbs 3 at 34+1.

He had low blood sugar for a couple of days & we were in SCBU for 2 weeks trying to establish feeding but he was strong & healthy.

He’s just turned 1 & is sat opposite me wolfing down his lunch, he’s the biggest 1 year old I know!

Good luck OP, I’m sure whatever happens from here everything will turn out well for you as well, 34 weeks really isn’t that far from full term xx

I had similar at 36 weeks. They induced due to infection risk. Baby was fine and we were allowed home after a few days in a hot cot. Good luck op xx

When I was expecting DS1, my waters broke at 33 weeks. I was given the steroids, antibiotics, and was admitted to hospital for 2 days, but was then discharged as I was showing no signs of infection.
I was told to continue taking the antibiotics, take my temperature several times a day, and to go straight back to hospital if I started feeling unwell or started running a temperature.
My consultant told me that based on a balance of risks, they considered that baby would be best staying in utero until 37 weeks, when the lungs are fully developed, provided that there was no sign of infection. Any sign of infection would tip the balance towards getting the baby delivered early.

As it turned out, I went into spontaneous labour at 34 weeks. DS1 was born in good condition and taken straight to SCBU, as part of his treatment he was put on IV antibiotics immediately, as a precaution in case he’d picked up any infection from the PPROM. He stayed on the IV antibiotics until test results came back showing no infection.
He also needed initial support with breathing and feeding, which the paediatricians said was normal for a 34 weeker.

Have you discussed your fears about stillbirths with your midwives or consultant?
Hope things go well for you OP.

Enwi · 15/05/2018 14:46

Yes I have discussed my fears and the first midwife I spoke to said it was very likely i’d be induced as soon as my steroids had had time to work. The next midwife i spoke to said they would try and wait until 36 weeks, and the next one said that they don’t induce at this hospital for ruptured membranes and I would just be observed Hmm
Doctors have been very reluctant to give me any sort of answer at all. I’m terrified of being sent home only for nothing to happen as I just know I will spent the next 3 weeks worrying myself sick.
Thank you so much for your replies everyone, I am so grateful to hear your experiences.

I was admitted to hospital at 28 weeks for a different reason but also had the steroid injections was born at 32 weeks, spent 4 weeks is SCBU and is now 11 months old. 34 weeks isn't that early anymore although I know it's scary. Best of luck OP x
