BV in pregnancy

I've name changed for this as I'm so embarrassed Blush and sorry but this is going to be long and TMI.

Has anyone suffered with BV when pregnant? I've never had it before but have suffered on and off with thrush for the past year or 2. Thrush came back with a vengeance when I found out I was pregnant, fast forward to 17 weeks and I went to see a GP as I have had it pretty much constantly since then. Did a swab and given usual canestan pessary/pill meds. Had a call from GP a few days later saying that not only did I have thrush but I had BV too. Was told there was treatment but not allowed to have while pregnant so had a repeat swab a week later to check the thrush treatment had worked.

Another few days later had a call from a receptionist saying another GP had prescribed more canestan as thrush still present...was given canestan for those who have had thrush previously. Used it on Wednesday but Thursday I started having terribly large amounts of green, chunky discharge and it sometimes feels like it's dripping out of me....I feel so disgusting.

Have had a quick Google and seen that antibiotics for BV can be given in pregnancy! So before I go back to the GP all guns blazing has anyone had treatment for BV in pregnancy which was successful? I just want this stuff gone, I'm fed up of treatments and swabs and getting absolutely nowhere Sad

Hi. I had BV before I was pregnant (thought it was thrush) and while I was pregnant and the baby’s heart stopped beating at 14+4 so I will forever wonder if the BV had traveled up to him and killed him.

Since I got diagnosed after that, I could have the antibiotics orally.
There is vaginal treatment though, and also a different type of ‘trust type’ treatment that the doctor can prescribe that’s actually for BV called Metronidazole.

What’s the stuff that they have given you?

SecretStash · 13/05/2018 08:24

I have to add, there’s a whole list of things that I wonder was the cause of my miscarriage so it may not have been the bv but I always feel terrible that I kept assuming it was thrush.

Oh god now I'm really worried. I'm 19+5.

I was given the normal canestan pessary and cream to start with, and the canestan with a pessary shaped like a dewdrop this week, which said It was for women who have had thrush before. It was bloody huge....

Don't have much faith in my GP so will give my midwife a call tomorrow. Shes more on the ball than any GP I've seen lately.

Maybe worth calling 111 and seeing what they have to say? Maybe see an out of hours gp?

SecretStash · 13/05/2018 09:27

Definitely speak to the midwife.

Hi can I ask your symptoms? I think I got thrush as my vagina is itchy and sometimes sore. Especially when I walk it feels like I am constantly having a wedgie. I’ve bought canesten cream and prescribed a pessary (that I forgot to pick up). It’s been 5 days of using the cream and although it’s not too bad, I can definitely tell it’s still there. I’m not sure what to do as I don’t think I’ve had thrush before. It’s almost a sort of ticklish feeling just inside my vagina...

Gem173 · 13/05/2018 10:07

Also just want to mention that my partner and I haven’t had sex but did do some foreplay the other week, so not sure if you can get BV that way :/

Darkstar4855 · 13/05/2018 12:33

There is vaginal gel/pessaries that you can buy in the chemist to treat BV. Canesten make one and there’s another one called Balance Activ. I’m not sure if it’s safe to use in pregnancy but maybe a pharmacist can advise you. In my experience it works as well as the antibiotic treatment (metronidazole).

SecretStash · 13/05/2018 14:07

In my experience thrush will never go with just cream alone, PP. The cream just helps the symptoms. You need the pessary.

Furchestersucks · 13/05/2018 15:35

Gem symptoms for me is intense itching and soreness down below, then 4-5 days later alot of bad smelling chunky green/yellow discharge. And I mean ALOT.

Will go to the chemists tomorrow to look for a BV specific treatment. My GP told me there was no safe treatment in pregnancy Hmm

If you search NICE recommendations there are treatment guidelines for BV in pregnancy. I was prescribed oral antibiotics (metronidazole) via the hospital when it was picked up I had it at 18 weeks. Definitely have a read/print out relevant bits and go back to the doctor. Good luck!

Dandelion89 · 16/05/2018 11:58

I was diagnosed with bv and thrush a few weeks ago. I had the pessary for the thrush and a 7 day course of clindamycin which needed to be inserted into the vagina at night. Normally you treat bv with metronidazole in non-pregnant females but I was told you can't have it in pregnancy. Please try not to worry too much about it but definitely worth seeing someone else. I got nowhere at the gp so I went to the gum clinic where they can take a swab and have a look under the microscope and check there and then.
